Walking In The Light

Gbile Akanni · 1:00:00

Gbile Akanni teaches that believers must diligently guard their spiritual vision and communion with God to ensure the light within them does not become darkness, enabling them to truly walk as children of light.
In this devotional sermon, Gbile Akanni emphasizes the critical importance of maintaining a pure spiritual vision and continual fellowship with God to walk as children of light. Drawing from Scripture, he warns believers to guard against the light within becoming darkness, illustrating this with the example of King David's fall. Akanni encourages a life of ongoing communion with Jesus, the true Light of the world, to experience transformation and avoid spiritual deception.

Luke 11 from verse 33 to 36 I read, it says, No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand that those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye.

Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Verse 35 Therefore, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.

If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light. We noted from God's Word that the Lord Jesus said to Peter, What you saw of me did not come by flesh and blood. It is my Father who revealed it to you.

And as we pressed on in the opera, we saw the need to keep crying for understanding. That we must not presume that we know about this greater task. We need to keep looking to God to grant to us insight.

This morning, I sense God will have us take heed to an instruction that came again from the very mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ as far as much as this greater task is concerned. The Lord led us last night as a servant came to begin to introduce to us what this greater task is. And that it is that will be light.

That we carry a life that is light. And so this morning, the emphasis laid in my heart for us to consider together is the charge that I saw the Lord giving to the disciples. In the passage we have read, my attention particularly is on verse 35.

It says, Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. As I looked at this, whereas in Luke, the context looked that Jesus was addressing both the crowd and his disciples. But when I took a look at it from Matthew chapter 6, where the same instruction came.

I saw the Lord addressing the disciples. While he had earlier said, you are the light of the world. And last night from Ephesians, God said, you were once darkness.

Now are you light in the Lord. Walk ye as children of light. What came to my heart strongly is that the big challenge is the challenge of walking as light.

Walking as light. Now you are light in the Lord. Walk ye as children of light.

And it is in this regard that I saw the wisdom that the Lord Jesus Christ is bringing. As an instruction for us, as a charge, as a Dua. It said, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.

Take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. With the emphasis on the life light that God began to show us yesterday and introduce us to. We noted why it says, I will use you to restore the people of Israel.

That the greater task is to make us light. If you come with me in the way the Lord Jesus Christ began to introduce this matter. He said, no one when he has laid a lamb, puts it in a secret place or under a basket.

But on a lamp stand that those who come in may see it. No man after he has laid a lamb puts it under a bush. There is a task to give light.

There is a great task to give light to shine in the dark places of the world. But then Jesus began to give this charge. He said, I want you to note that the lamb of the body is the eye.

The body is the eye. He said, therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.

The lamb of the body is the eye. Some other version says, if your eye is healthy, your body will be full of light. If your eye is unhealthy, your body will become darkened.

I saw the Lord speaking about the eye and the understanding that is coming is the need to pay attention to how we see. The need to pay attention to our understanding. If darkness will not take over a life that is meant to be light, I saw Jesus saying we should pay attention.

He said to your eye, if your eye is good, if how you see, you see clearly, your body shall be full of light. To walk in the light, we must keep seeing as the Lord sees. Our understanding must be held continually.

The lamb of the body is the eye. If your eye is tampered with, if your eye is good, your body will be full of light. If your eye becomes bad, your body will become darker.

And it says, if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness. My mind quickly went back to Genesis chapter 3. Ever before Eve would take the fruit, ever before she would be led astray, you recall that in the beginning the Bible says God made man in his image. He wanted him to have dominion.

He carried a measure of the life of God. But ever before the confusion in chapter 3 would take place, what the enemy went for is how she saw. The Bible said, did God say, you should not take anything of this fruit.

He said no, God did not say that. But what I want to point our attention to, the word of God said, when she saw. What God has said, don't touch until now.

And they have maintained that. In the light of what the enemy was suggesting, in the light of what the tempter was saying to her, another understanding took over. The Bible says, when she saw that the fruit was good and pleasant to the eye, she took of it.

Of course, the Bible says their eyes were open. But you know, it's a different understanding that has come to them. Darkness are taking over.

And as God's word was coming to us and God says, once you were darkness, now are you light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. I saw that the Lord is bringing us a charge.

They need to take heed that the light in us never becomes darkness. And I'm looking at the critical way to it is that continually in our fellowship with God, that we are continually enlightened by God. In our communion with the Lord, that we're ever receiving the light of his presence.

I saw from God's word that to keep being the light, to keep shining the light, there's a need to continually be receiving light from his presence. I recognize that when fellowship, communion with the Lord breaks down, a man can stray into darkness. When a man no longer sees as God intends him to see, he can stray into darkness.

And when God is emphasizing that the greater task is not just the activity of preaching, it's not how much we are running around, it's bearing that light. I hear the Lord Jesus Christ saying, take heed that the light that is in you does not become darkness. One quick illustration that came to my heart is the experience we saw with the King David.

A man after God's own heart. A man who lived in communion with the Lord. A man who lived ever sensitive to the will of God.

A time came when we recognized from God's word that this servant of God strayed. You will recall that the Bible says, in the days when kings go to battle, David is sent Joab, isn't it? Now, what touched me and what I want to quickly refer to, as I'm considering this warning, this charge, that we hear from the Lord Jesus Christ, take heed that the light that is in you be not darkness. And as to help us in that, it says, make sure your eye is healthy.

Make sure you see correctly, you keep seeing correctly. Make sure you are in communion with the Lord in such a way that you see as God sees. What touched me was that as this man gradually, I perceived there was a breakdown in his communion with the Lord.

And the enemy came, showed him a woman. You know the rest of the story, how he went to Gethsemane. But where I'm going, is the word of God concluded how he comforted her, how he took her to be his wife.

And that chapter closed by saying what David did displeased the Lord. But where I'm going is what happened afterward. The Lord sent Nathan, the prophet, unto David.

And as he began with his parable, said there's a man in this your kingdom. There's someone in this your kingdom. And he narrated a parable.

Said there was a rich man, you know the rest of that story. And after he spoke about how this rich man took what belonged to a poor man unto himself. The word of God said, David was aroused.

David was very angry. And in reaction, he said, if that has happened in this kingdom, such a man must do what? Must die. As I'm looking at the word of God.

And I'm looking at the instruction of the Lord Jesus Christ. It touched me that a man who strayed into darkness and will not know it. Unless continually communion with the Lord.

Ensuring that our eyes remain healthy. That we continue to see as God wants us to see. Is he dead? He said that man must die.

And I believe he said that out of his righteous spirit. He said that out of his love for the Lord. He said that as a man that has history of the work of righteousness.

Unfortunately, he did not know himself is presently enveloped in darkness. He did not know. And each time I look at that, I'm wondering, how did it happen? That a man that was once ever sensitive to God.

A man that just caught in the garment of his master. The Bible says his heart pricked him. How did it happen? That such a man could take somebody else's wife.

Could go further to kill her husband. And he did not know it. How did it happen? That such a man could plan and devise wickedness.

And even when a parable is told, it never occurred to him that this is about him. It made me see the seriousness of the warning that I saw Jesus giving. And it touched my heart to note, as the Holy Spirit began to say yesterday.

That the greater task is living that life light. It made me see that it's easy to preach and still be in darkness. It made me see that it's easy for somebody to have a righteous indignation of a kind.

But it's presently also in darkness. When I read the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew chapter 7. That he said, many will come and say to me in that day, in your name we casted out devils. In your name we did many great works.

And he will say, I never knew you. Depart from me ye that walk iniquity. Utterly one is wondering, how can somebody cast out devils and is a walker of iniquity? How could somebody have done miracles and is a walker of iniquity? I'm seeing the wisdom of the master here.

The light of the body is the eye. If your eye is healthy. Your whole body, it says, will be full of light.

If your eye is darkened, is evil, is unhealthy. The Bible says, there's a danger of darkness taking over. What does this imply this morning? Again, as we come to the issue of our devotion.

One of the scriptures the Lord referred us to yesterday was John chapter 8 verse 12. The Lord Jesus said, I am the light of the world. If anyone follows me, can we go to that scripture please? John 8, John chapter 8, are we there? John chapter 8, verse 12.

Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows me, shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. He who follows me, shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

It's dawning on me that while in Christ, we are light. If the light in you will not be darkness. I saw Jesus again emphasizing, I am the light of the world.

It is he who follows me, that shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. He who follows me, shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. If it be thus, take heed, that the light in us be not dark.

And we could see an example of a life that was once walking in the light. Overtaken. Able to still speak big.

Able to still do many great things. But the life had been hijacked. Darkness had taken over.

I saw again this morning, that one of the things we need to pay attention to. Our walk with the master. Our keeping in step with Jesus.

Our keeping in communion with him. He says, I am the light of the world. In John 1 we read last night.

He said, he is the light that lightens every man that comes into the world. It is he that lightens every man that comes into the world. I do not know how best to express this.

But the impression the Holy Spirit is putting on my heart. Is apart from the Lord. You are in danger of straying into darkness.

It is as we keep in communion with him. That will ensure that the light in us does not become darkness. It says, take heed.

Take heed that the light in you is not darkness. Even being light is the greater task. I saw the Lord Jesus Christ saying, it looks to me that it will be.

That life will be sustained in communion with himself. That life will be kept in communion with himself. In John 15 it says, abide in me.

As no branch can bear fruit of itself. Unless it abides in the vine. And so this morning.

The charge I see the Lord bringing to us in our devotion here. Is this warning, say take heed. Take heed.

That the light in you is not darkness. With all your doing, take heed. That the light in you is not darkness.

Even as you seek to do your best for the Lord. Take heed. That you are not overtaken by darkness.

Take heed. That the light in you is not darkness. And the fourth dimension I see.

Jesus said is as we keep step with him in discipleship. It is those who follow me. Says I am the light of the world.

Those who follow me shall not walk in darkness. They shall have the light of life. Those who keep in step with me.

Shall not walk in darkness. They shall have the light of life. Come with me to 2 Corinthians chapter 3. 2 Corinthians chapter 3 please.

Verse 16. Up to verse 18. Are we there? The scripture says nevertheless.

When one turns to the Lord. The veil is taken away. Now.

The Lord is the spirit. And where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all with unveiled face.

Beholding as in a mirror. The glory of the Lord. Are being transformed into the same image.

From glory to glory. Just as by the spirit of the Lord. What is the issue I want to draw our attention to? In the light of what we are considering this morning.

The need to keep turning to the Lord. The need to keep turning. To the Lord.

If our eyes will remain sound. And darkness. The light in us will not be darkness.

There must be a continuous turning. A continuous turning in our hearts. Unto the Lord.

The Bible says. Is as we keep beholding Him. Is as we keep looking to the Lord.

As we keep beholding Him. With unveiled face. Yes we have been lightened in the Lord.

But is as we keep beholding Him as in a mirror. The glory of the Lord. The word of God says.

Something keeps happening to us. The work of transformation becomes progressive with us. It says we are transformed into the same image.

From glory to glory. As by the spirit of the Lord. As we keep turning to Him.

As we keep in communion with Him. As we keep in step with Him. We are changed from one degree of glory to another.

This morning. As we begin to talk to the Lord. The charge I see the Lord bringing to us is simply this.

Now that you are light in the Lord. The demand to walk as children of light. But I hear Him say take heed.

That the light in you. Is not darkness. Take heed.

That the light in you. Is not darkness. When David said that man must die.

That looks like a light. Alas. Is a man already in darkness.

Until it was told him you are the man. That light shone. And he said oh.

I have seen. And I saw Jesus saying lest you are overtaken. Take heed.

That the light in you. Is not darkness. But.

His wisdom that I see. Which makes the issue of our devotion this morning critical. Is that it is in His presence.

That we continue to carry that light. In Psalm 43. The Bible says send out your light.

And your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to God.

Even God may exceed in joy. I think it's Psalm 33 that says because with you is the fountain of life. It is in your light.

That we see light. It is in your light. That we see light.

Dear brothers and sisters this morning. My encouragement to us. If we must walk in this greater task.

Is a need to take heed to what the Lord Jesus Christ is saying. Our communion with Him. With all our doing and all our goings.

Our communion with Him. It is in His light. That we will ever see light.

When we stray away from His presence. We have an enemy who is hanging in the corner. 1 Peter says be sober.

Be vigilant. Because your adversary the devil like a roaring lion. Is standing somewhere seeking whom he may devour.

It is in His light. We see light. It is as we keep step with Him.

That we keep in light. It is as we keep in communion with Him. That we are continually enlightened.

I do not know how best to express this this morning. But it is coming strong to my own heart that the Lord is saying take heed. Take heed.

That the light in you is not darkness. Take heed. That the light in you is not darkness.

And if you must the Lord is saying. The light of the body is your eye. The light of the body is your eye.

It is as you keep seeing. This morning as we are going to pray. Part of our cry to the Lord.

Is that the Lord will keep giving us understanding of His counsel. That the Lord will keep Himself enlightening us. That it will be in His light.

When we see light that we will be enlightened. I want to conclude this. By taking that prayer.

I think it is Psalm 36. Come with me to the book of Psalms please. Psalm 36.

Psalm 36. And we will read verse 7. Verse 8. And verse 9. Are we there? Psalm 36. Verse 7, verse 8 and verse 9. It says how excellent is thy loving kindness O God.

Therefore the children of men put their trust. Under the shadow of thy wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied.

With the fatness of thy house. Thou shall make them drink of the river. Of thy pleasures.

For with thee. Is the fountain of life. In thy light.

Shall we see light. For with thee. Is the fountain of life.

In thy light shall we see light. Chapter 43. Verse 3. It says O send out your light.

And your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy hill.

And to your tabernacle. Then I will go to the altar of God. To God my exceeding joy.

And on the harp I will praise you. O God my God. I want to stop for us to pray this morning.

And the cry is for our eyes. To continually be enlightened by the Lord. Because the eye is the light of the body.

And Jesus says that the light in us be not darkness. We need continually is light. We are going to pray.

With these passages. First recognizing that he said with you is the fountain of life. It is in your light.

That we see light. If we must keep seeing that light. We must continually be enlightened by him.

We are going to pray this morning. Lord send out your light. And your truth.

And let them lead me. Let them bring me on to your holy hill. And to your tabernacles.

Taking heed. That the light in you. Is not darkness.

I know I have liberty to press on beyond here. I just sense a need for us to pray. If you don't mind I would like you to please stand up as we speak to God.

Can we stand? We are going to pray. And the first cry I sense we need to make to God. Is that we will understand this instruction that he is bringing to us.

In this church this morning. As his disciples we will understand what God is saying. When he said pay attention.

Take heed. That the light in you. Is not darkness.

Can you pray this morning that God help me to understand what you are saying. The words of man. Has failed to be able to fully express this.

But can we ask the Lord. Lord the charge I hear you giving me this morning. Give me understanding of it.

Can we pray? Can we pray? Can we talk to the Lord about this? He said when he kindles a lamp. He does not put it under a bushel. It is to be placed on a lamp stand.

But here we see his warning. Here we see his counsel. He said take heed.

Take heed that the light in you. Is not darkness. Watch your eyes.

Ensure that your eye is healthy. Ensure your eye is healthy. Please pray this morning.

Please pray this morning. Lord this input this dimension you are speaking about. Give me understanding of it.

Holy Spirit speak deeper into my heart about this. If you never saw anything you wouldn't be speaking. Lord.

Help me Lord. Help me to understand what you are saying. Help me to understand what you are saying.

Please talk to God. Father we have need of help today. You are speaking Lord about the greater task.

You have begun to introduce us. Lord. To the greater task.

So that we use you to build. The discarded people of Israel. But there is a greater task.

The greater task of being a light to the nation. And you say Lord. Every light that you kindle is not meant to be put under the bush.

There is a lamp stand so that you can give light. But Lord you are saying to all this morning. Take heed.

Take heed that the light in you is not darkness. Take heed that you are not overtaken. Take heed.

Take heed to your eyes. Ensure you keep step with me. Take heed.

Take heed. That you keep turning to me. This morning Lord we pray for understanding.

Lord please help us. Help us O Lord. Help us not to take your presence for granted.

Help us not to take our relationship with you lightly. For with you alone is the fountain of life. It is only in your light that we see light.

Spirit of the Lord we ask help us to recognize this. Help us to recognize this O Lord. Help us to recognize this O Lord.

Never to be wise in our own conceit. Never imagining that we have arrived. Lord keep in step with you.

That you are the light of the world. It is only those who follow you that will not grow up in darkness. Only those who follow you will have the light of life.

This morning Lord we are asking. Lord help us. This instruction that God you are bringing.

Lord quiet as it is. Lord express with tamarind leaves. Yet we plead with you Lord.

Help us to take heed to it. You bid us take heed to yourself. Take heed.

That the light that is in you is not darkness. O Father help us. Spirit of the Lord we pray this morning please help us.

Help us to see this greater task. Grant us your wisdom. As to walk in it.

Lord help us. We recognize O Lord. That God we could be engaged with several other things.

And we could miss on this matter. We could miss out on this matter. We may be able to preach.

May be able to do many works for Lord. We could ignore this issue of this life light. And we hear you say Lord this morning take heed.

Ensure. That the light in you is not darkness. O Father we ask you to help us.

We ask you Lord please be gracious unto us. As on this mount you unveil to all the greater task. Lord we are pleading.

Help us to heed this wisdom. Paying attention to our eyes. Paying attention to Lord our watchfulness in your presence.

That darkness does not overtake us. Lord please help us this morning. Please help us.

Please help us. In the name of Jesus. We are still going to pray.

Those two scriptures in 2 Corinthians 3 says as we turn to the Lord. If any man turns to the Lord. The veil is taken away.

That is as we keep beholding him. That we are changed from one degree of glory unto another. I want you to pray that even as we sit before the Lord this day.

Can you ask the Lord help me to keep turning to you. Help my heart not to wander away. Help me to keep turning to you.

And Lord that you may give me light. Last night it says awake you will sleep. Arise from the dead and Christ shall give you light.

It is as we turn to him that we have light. Can you pray this morning. Say Lord have you brought me again to this mount.

Help me to turn to you wholeheartedly. Lord Jesus this day give me light. Can we pray.

Can we pray. Can we ask this of the Lord this morning. Can we ask this of the Lord this morning.

He is ready to do that for us. We have his word. Let the eye of our understanding be turned to him this morning.

Let the eye of our heart be turned to the Lord this day. Can you please call on the Lord this morning. Say Lord give me light.

Give me light. Say send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me.

Let them bring me unto you. Lord as you speak further of this greater task. Of bearing the life light.

Lord give me light today. It is in your light we shall see light. Lord give me light today.

Please pray. Please pray. Please pray.

Please talk to the Lord this morning. Lord help my heart. The entrance of your word it gives light.

It brings understanding to the simple. Having brought me Lord to this mount today. I entreat you give me light.

In the name of Jesus. Lord give me light. Brother Josiah.

It is for this greater task. That the Lord has mobilized you unto this mount. Just plead with him.

Entreat the Lord with all your heart. Insist with him. that this great attack, you will not come down from this mountain unto that which is said to you, he has done it for you.

Let's play with him, let's play with him. He has done it for you, he has done it for you. He has done it for you, he has done it for you.

In Jesus name we pray. Can we take our program sheets? I'm going to take this hymn in page 33. Hymn number 23.
