Good evening and welcome to Love Europe. We are glad you're here for three years. You're not here for three years.

Tens of thousands of people have been praying for Love Europe. And tonight you're here. You are an answer to prayer.

Some of you have traveled right around the world to be here today. From Greenland to New Zealand from Ecuador to Korea from India to Canada I knew there were two Canadians here tonight. From more than 60 nations around the world one of the largest gatherings of nations for evangelism ever to come to Europe.

Some of us have just flown in from another great congress, the Lausanne Congress in Manila. 48 hours ago I was in the Philippines at that congress. And flying from Manila I found myself sitting next to a Filipino Roman Catholic charismatic brother.

And we came into a terrible storm, a typhoon. And the plane was going up and down and all over the place. And I was praying and becoming dedicated and consecrated and rededicated to the Lord.

It was terrifying. And the Filipino brother looked at me and said, In Christ! I said, OK, but the problem is in this airplane. I hope you had a better journey here than I did.

Three weeks ago Mikhail Gorbachev was just 20 miles away from here in Strasbourg. And he shared with the European Parliament his vision for Europe. For a common European home.

A united Europe. I wish he could be here this evening. Because we have brothers and sisters not only from Western Europe but from Eastern Europe here tonight.

From Poland. And Hungary. And Yugoslavia.

Now I'm going to ask if somehow the lights can pick these people out. If you are from Eastern Europe, will you just stand right where you are? Let's give them a welcome. Please be seated.

In the book of Ephesians, Paul shares his vision for a united Europe. And a united church. You and I, the body of Christ.

He said, it's a good verse for us to begin our congress with. Ephesians chapter 4. And verse 4. There is one body. And one spirit.

Just as you were called to one hope. When you were called. One Lord.

One faith. One baptism. One God and Father of all.

Who is over all. Through all. And in all.

The Bible says, tonight we are one from 60 nations. I want us to celebrate our oneness. This may be a little chaotic.

But I want you to stand up and greet somebody that you haven't met near to you. But wait a moment. Don't knock the chairs over.

Don't fall off the balcony. Some of you in the aisle can move out into the aisle. Take a minute to greet somebody you haven't met yet.

Welcome them to Offenburg. When you hear the trumpet sound. That is not the biblical trumpet sound.

You will hear that. Unexpectedly. When you hear the trumpet, then you stop talking and you get down to your seats.

Greet one another now. My, you seem like you enjoy meeting each other. I want to introduce Stuart McAllister to you.

You are going to enjoy getting to know Stuart McAllister this week. He is from Scotland. He is also the director for Love Europe.

He is a tough guy. But he has a gentle spirit. But if you are into hugging, you might want to count the cost before you give him a hug.

Stuart and his wife Mary and their children live in Vienna, Austria. Stuart comes to lead us in prayer. Isn't this exciting? You know, there are three words in the last two years that are special to me.

I believe that God loves Europe. And that you coming together is to express that love for Europe. Europe is the lonely continent.

Thousands of people are crying out, doesn't somebody love me? And what excites me is that every one of you are going to find other Europeans and you are going to tell them that God loves them. Let's keep our eyes on Jesus this week. Some of you had a little bit of a hard time as you have arrived.

A few disappointments in not getting perhaps the things we have been looking for. But let us pray that wherever God is sending us this summer, that our lives will make a difference. Let's pray together.

Father, we come to you tonight in the name of Jesus. And we are all too well aware of our weakness. We realize, Lord, under pressure we get irritated and we fail and we sin.

And we don't come to you, Lord, tonight as perfect examples of Christianity. But we do come to you as people who want to be used by you. Lord, at the very beginning of the Love Europe Congress, would you pour out your Holy Spirit upon us? Would you bless the town of Offenburg because this Congress is taking place here? Will you touch the lives of the people that live right here in this beautiful town? Father, we call upon you to move our hearts towards the call to world mission.

Father, we thank you, Lord Jesus, that you loved us enough to die for us. And we want to lay down our lives for you. Lead us tonight, Lord.

Guide us through this week. And send your power. In Jesus' name.

Amen. When we began praying and planning the Love Europe Evangelism and Congress, I said to George Verwer, where do you think we ought to hold a Congress like this? He scribbled a little note and it had Germany on it. And I went to see Fritz Schuller and asked... Some of us talked to Fritz Schuller, the leader of OM's work in Germany.

And Fritz said, you are welcome. We will help you organize the Congress here in Germany. Fritz has a missionary vision to send people and money to Germany.

Into God's work for India and other countries around the world. He's also... He's also not a bad table tennis player. He and his wife Alfreda and family live in Mosbach.

Fritz is going to come and introduce a very special guest. And has a rather special surprise for us also. Let's welcome Fritz Schuller.

Our special guest tonight is the Bürgermeister of Offenburg. We have been working the last few months with the town hall authorities and we have received great help from them all the way. We said we want to bring 5,000 people to Offenburg.

Now Offenburg has about 50,000 inhabitants. And then we realized 5,000 is not enough. We will bring 6,000.

So we said we need more space in your schools. And there was a great welcome and willingness to help to give us more schools and more space. And that's why I'm very glad to introduce to you tonight Dr. Bruder, the Bürgermeister of Offenburg.

Dear guests from more than 60 countries from all over the world. We are happy you came to Offenburg, to the heart of Europe. We are happy so many of you came.

Even though we had some problems to put you up. But we hope that all of you have a good quarter. And if something should be out of order, please forgive us.

We try our best. We have an armor of the city of Offenburg and in the center there is an open gate. That's a symbol of hospitality.

This is an exception which may happen everywhere. We hope it will stay to be an exception. Let me give you a few sentences about our region here.

This region in the center of Europe was always fighted for by different peoples. For centuries the population of this region suffered from wars and devastation. For example, 300 years ago the city was burned down just to leave a few houses.

But this region shows that reconciliation is possible. A peaceful living together of people who had hatred against each other earlier. Now we are friends from both sides of the Rhine River.

There's close ties of friendship. We'll see each other nearly every day. We want to start our work of peace just at the base level in the city politics.

That's why our city has a twin city in the German Democratic Republic since one year. Inviting people to meet from both parts of Germany, we want to put away this hostility. I'm very happy that there are a few of you from the German Democratic Republic.

Dear guests, we are happy that you have your congress in Offenburg. And please enjoy staying here. Let me finish in English.

We are very thankful for the great job they are doing during this week. As you have already heard, we are very glad that you are here and that you have come to the heart of Europe. During the last months and weeks, we have experienced God's goodness in preparing this congress and this whole campaign.

We have experienced many answers to prayer. A few months ago, we didn't even know who is going to work on all the practical arrangements like accommodations and the whole site here, to organize the whole site. And God has given us the right people to do that.

I thought when we will have 3,000 people, we will have a lot of people. And finally, more than 6,000 came. You can imagine what a work it has been done in the past in order to organize this conference.

Just one story. We usually don't have so many couples. So we were thinking of having maybe 50 or at the most 100 couples with us for this conference.

But finally, we realized that more and more couples are registering and we didn't know where to put the couples. We had among the OM leadership a great debate what to do with the couples. They thought we divide them and send them in this sports hall and the wife in this sports hall and the husband in this sports hall.

I was campaigning for that idea. But other OM leaders thought we cannot do that. So we didn't know what to do with all these lovely couples.

So we didn't know what to do with all these lovely couples. And one day, Emanuel Böker, who led the organization, met a nice man in Offenburg. He said we can get the company crown in order to put up tents.

This was just maybe two or three weeks ago. And in this way, we have seen how God has answered prayers in a very practical way. So we are very glad that all the couples can be together.

We could go on and tell story after story, but there is no time. We are very privileged to have you here because you are living testimony of what God has been doing in your life and what God wants to do through your life. Germany has a lot of nominal Christianity.

We don't need more church buildings. We have them in every village, in every town. But we need people like you who spread the good news and the love of God in all these people's hearts.

And we were thinking what can we do to show these people who are coming from all over the world that we really like them. We thought it's very easy to make words. It's just part of the ceremony here up here.
