Lords Supper: What Does Your Faith Rest In?

Good morning, we'll be reading from 1st Corinthians chapter 2 and I when I came to you brothers Did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling in my speech and my message were not implausible words of wisdom But a demonstration of the spirit and of power so that your faith may not rest in the wisdom of men But in the power of God Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom Although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age who are doomed to pass away But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God which God decreed before the ages for our glory None of the rulers of this age understood this for if they had they would not have crucified the Lord of glory But as it is written What no eye has seen Nor ear heard nor the heart of man imagined what God has prepared for those who love them These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit for the Spirit searches everything Even the depths of God for who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person which is in him So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God Now we have received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God that we might understand the things freely given as Freely given us by God and we impart that we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit Interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God for they are folly to him And he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned The spiritual person judges all things but is himself to be judged by no one For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct them, but we have the mind of Christ Well, the men could come and hand out the the drink and the bread and we invite you if you are a Christian You can partake with us this morning if you've obeyed Christ Have been baptized Obeyed Christ to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to trust in him so 1st Corinthians 2 Look at verse 5 Creates a question He says so that your faith might not rest in You could rephrase it. What does your faith? Rest in what's your faith? What does your faith rest in because Paul's saying that your faith might not rest Your faith your trust could have a improper object And what's the object Paul puts here? wisdom of men Wisdom of men that could come in many forms men men have wisdom and they say well You're you know little kid just say this little sinner's prayer and you're good to go. It doesn't matter what happens with your life Right men think that's a wise thing to get a bunch of kids to say they're Christians It's wisdom of men.

You don't want to trust in that get the Hebrews roots movement Wisdom of men say let's do all these external Jewish things and that you can put your faith in that Right that that's false right with men men come up with so much wisdom the Church of Christ That the whole dynasty guys are a part of their what they got wisdom of men you go get baptized and you're born again That's heresy. You're not saved by going in the water being baptized baptism of regeneration is a false Gospel that's wisdom of men you ask people. Why are you going to heaven? What's your hope in? You're gonna have a lot of people out there They're gonna say their hope is in the fact they're taking the Lord's Supper or the Catholics calling it the Eucharist They're gonna say that's that's my hope This is my sins now this week have been cleansed because I just took a cup I took bread and somehow It's actually Christ, which is false and that cleansed my sins away Alright their faith is resting in that verse 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but What should your faith rest in? the power of God Where's the power of God? Romans says the power of God is in the gospel.

It's in what Christ is done It's Christ death that that's where our great Hope is and this also just remind me so that your faith might not rest in what's what's another place people's faith rest in That's really sneaky. It's subtle They trust in their own faith Right they trust in their own believing Do I have enough faith Or they they they turn their faith. Well faith is some idea of having a feeling and So they're looking well, I have I had this emotional experience and if I've had that emotional experience I must be a Christian because I shed tears When I looked at the crown of thorns or something that Craig had up we should look at that crown of thorns and have some sort of Emotion there.

It'd be great to have tears looking at something that points to the physical sufferings of Christ But if I look at my tears and say well, that's where my face gonna rest in I had tears at that moment when that preacher was preaching many years ago that that that your faith is resting in something That's sinking sand, right? I dare not trust the sweetest frame but a holy lean on Jesus name our faith has to be in what Christ has Done and Paul says it right there in verse 2 He has made he has made a determination and this is an amazing verse to memorize 1st Corinthians 2 2 For I have decided the ESV says decided but there's some versions they render it determined for I have determined to know nothing among you except Except for Jesus Christ and him crucified and that was that was the whole focus of Paul's life I I've determined or nothing among you except for Jesus Christ. That's his person who he is. He's got the God-man and Him crucified.

That's his work on the cross as substitutionary death And he mentions right there. We didn't come proclaiming lofty speech or wisdom wisdom of men verse 5 and so brethren what so that your faith might not rest in and the beauty of the Lord's Supper as we partake of these Symbols in a moment is symbolically just like my wedding ring. This is symbol It doesn't make me married but I look at it and it reminds me of the vows I made to my wife it reminds me of I'm Married.

This is the same idea. It's just a symbol. We're remembering what Christ has done and That's where our faith is resting.

This is pointing us to where our faith is Resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ and we rest by faith Right, we live by faith not by sight. I Can frustrate the younger Christians sometimes they want to see they want to feel Brethren we do see a lot. We see answered prayers.

We see God giving grace to people in very difficult situations There's a lot we see as a church that is very tangible. This isn't some blind faith Even in our own lives, you know, John 15 says bear much fruit and so prove to be his disciple I mean you look at your life and the fruit that's there. How do you explain that? It's not something you produce.

It's not something you forced out You're a part of the vine and God is bearing fruit in your life through the Lord Jesus Christ And you just you can't explain it. It's like how is there purity in my life when there wasn't purity? How can I have patience that that doesn't make sense? And that's the power of God Throughout our lives and so What is your faith rest in what is my faith my confidence? Paul says in what Philippians 3 we put no confidence in the flesh And he says we're the true circumcision because the circumcision party was coming along saying be circumcised put your confidence in that Paul says we're the true circumcision we've been circumcised in our hearts and Regenerated by the Spirit of God and so that that's where our hope is that that's all all this is is two symbols Pointing us and reminding us of what Christ has done for us and it's glorious brethren As you heard in the first hour, I mean that that was the Lord's Supper Exhortation for 50 minutes. I mean those are glorious truths about what Christ has done So brethren, let's let's eat this in remembrance of Christ Father we want to say with Paul God forbid that I should boast Save in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ That was the world was crucified to me and I to the world Lord we want to say with Paul that we count everything as a loss all of our works merits Everything is a loss the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord Lord Help us to be a determined people to determine a decided people We're like the man in India Or they're gonna kill his family and he wrote that song for I've decided to follow Jesus There's no turning back No turning back Lord Help us to not turn back And Lord, we know that turning back it starts in a subtle way just like a ship's captain falling asleep Not observing the compass and they start to drift off course And they don't even know it and they hit the reef and they sink Lord help us Keep his father or there's the balance of resting and you and yet being diligent and Vigilant Lord help us to keep mastering that in our lives as individual Christians Lord that we would Lord we'd live out both realities Worth just that we thank you for your son.

Well, there's nothing greater than what your son has done Lord the world People are boasting in America 250 years people are boasting in Lord the world Lord just the World Cup Lord. I love soccer. I love the highlights, but father Oh that stadiums would be filled with that many people to hear the gospel Lord that you would Lord, that's how it was when Whitfield was alive Everywhere he went It's like Lionel Messi going to play a game Lord, it's amazing.

You did that in this land Lord revive us again Lord save in greater numbers again Father you say that we have not because we asked not Lord. I asked I asked the Lord you would You would do the miracle of the new birth And that you would just save souls Lord, we love you We're thankful Lord, you've been so good to us In Christ's name. Amen
