Keith Malcomson teaches that genuine Christian fellowship, or koinonia, is most powerfully experienced through an intimate, ongoing partnership with the Holy Spirit, who empowers, guides, and comforts believers.
In this teaching sermon, Keith Malcomson explores the profound concept of koinonia—genuine fellowship—with the Holy Spirit. He emphasizes the Holy Spirit's role as a personal, sovereign helper who empowers believers, guides their lives, and enables effective ministry. Drawing from key scriptures like Philippians 2 and John 14-16, Keith reveals how intimate partnership with the Holy Spirit is essential for every Christian's walk and the life of the church. Through personal testimony and biblical insight, he invites listeners to deepen their relationship with the Holy Spirit and experience His transformative power.

Here tonight we're continuing on our series on koinonia, this issue of genuine fellowship in the body of Christ. We're not only thinking of fellowship one with the other, but we've already looked at fellowship with God the Father, we've looked at fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and now here tonight I want to look at koinonia with the Holy Spirit. Reading from Philippians chapter 2, if you find Ephesians and then just go right and find chapter 2, Philippians chapter 2, and I want to read from verse 1 to verse 12.
I want to preach here tonight, teach a little on the koinonia of the Holy Spirit, or with the Holy Spirit, or through the Holy Spirit, or by the Holy Spirit. When you begin to hear what I'm going to give to you tonight, this is the most maybe vital part of koinonia, and in fact it's the key to it all, the secret to it all, and in fact this fellowship of the Holy Spirit is the key to your Christian walk, to ministry, to everything you do. All the things you're struggling with right now in this meeting, the Holy Spirit is the answer, and He wants to help in those areas.
The only reason you're not finding help in those areas, it could be lack of knowledge, lack of attendance, lack of faith, lack of knowledge, or some other issue. But here tonight let's go to Philippians chapter 2 verse 1 to 12. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, what an emphasis.
We ought to read it as it's written. Fulfill ye my joy that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one account of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in loneliness of mind.
Let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which is also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore, God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure.
Let's pray together. Father, we do thank you tonight. Father, I pray tonight that you'd lay on every mind, every heart, the burden that everything depends upon the person of the Holy Spirit, who not only indwells us as real Christians, as real believers, but indwells the church.
He is here to guide, to lead, to speak, to correct, to rebuke. He can speak to us. He reveals things to us.
He instructs us. He commands us. He warns us.
He leads us. He exhorts us. He comforts.
He encourages. Lord God, he knows the right word to speak at the right time. Lord God, he knows where we need to be.
He knows how to make us into a vessel that you've spoken of in your word. Father, he has been given, Lord God, to make us vessels of prayer, Lord God, to crucify the flesh, Lord God, to preach the word of God. You've given him, Lord God, that we might be enabled to do every single command of the word of God.
Nothing depends ultimately upon us, but Lord God, us and weakness relying upon him, learning to fellowship with him, to be a partaker, a partner. Lord God, to enter into his world, into his community. Father, I pray that you speak to us tonight, that you'd stir up faith, that you'd lead us and guide us, that you'd give us a great reliance upon the person of the Holy Spirit, the one who speaks, who sees, who moves, who feels.
Lord God, we're asking of you that he had become so real in our gathering, in our individual lives tonight. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
In our Bibles, the term Holy Ghost in the English is used about 90 times plus. Holy Ghost, Ghost. The term Holy Spirit is used four times.
Holy Spirit. But listen, the term Ghost and Spirit is the same Greek word. It's the word pneuma for Spirit.
It means wind or breath. So in our English translation, there is no difference in the original between Ghost and Spirit. It's exactly the same word.
Then the word Spirit is used in our New Testament by itself 261 times. Sometimes it means the Spirit of God, and he's called the Spirit, neither holy nor anything else. He's called the Spirit, pneuma.
So sometimes the word Spirit speaks of a human spirit or God's spirit or a demonic spirit. So this word pneuma is talking about a whole spiritual world, an invisible world. You cannot see a human spirit, a person's spirit.
You see their body. You interact with their personality. But a spirit is much deeper.
It is invisible, unseen. You can't touch it with the human hand. And so we have the Holy Ghost mentioned time after time in many diverse ways.
I want to deal here tonight in part four of this series with koinonia, with the Holy Spirit, our fellowship, our communion, our interaction, our partnership with the person of the Holy Ghost. He's not a thing. He's not an act.
He's not a power. He is a person. The Bible very clearly shows that he speaks.
He has a voice. He has a mind. He has an intellect that he interacts with people as well as God the Father and God the Son.
He is a real eternal being. He's a person. He knows all things.
He is everywhere. He's omniscient. He has all power, all knowledge, all authority.
He is God. The Holy Spirit is a person, a sovereign person, a spiritual person. He is a person with sovereign will.
He acts by his own divine will. Now listen to what it says here. We just read in Philippians chapter two verse one, if there be there for any consolation in Christ.
And of course, let me ask you, is there consolation, comfort or encouragement in Christ? Is there? Well, Paul is writing, if there is any consolation in Christ, if there's any consolation, we know there's masses of consolation in Christ. He says, if any comfort of love, speaking about the love of God, is there comfort in the love of God? Is there any comfort in the love of God? Of course there is. Then he says, if any fellowship of the Spirit.
Do you see what he's saying here? He's emphasizing. So he's asking, is there any fellowship in the Holy Spirit? You know what he's emphasizing here is of course there is fellowship in the Holy Spirit. In fact, he's emphasizing and he's saying there is an overwhelming amount of fellowship in and with the Holy Spirit.
And then he says, if any bowels and mercy, and in God is there bowels, is there mercies? Of course there is. So four things here, he says, if there be any of this and not. And one of these four things is, if there be any fellowship in the Spirit.
So he's emphasizing something here. He's actually saying, come on guys, is there any fellowship in the Holy Ghost? This is our word koinonia that's used here, koinonia of the Spirit. Is there any koinonia of the Spirit? Now let me remind you again of what the word koinonia means, because I'm going to go through a number of scriptures here.
I've got masses. I've got a series of 20 messages busting to get out of this. God help you tonight.
But I want to tell you, listen very carefully because you're going to be shocked or you ought to be shocked. Is there any fellowship in the Holy Ghost? Oh yes, it is bountiful. There is deep koinonia in the Holy Ghost.
Listen to our four things and apply it to the person of the Holy Spirit here tonight. Remember what we said? Is there any participation? Is there any getting caught up in the Holy Spirit, in something far bigger and eternal? Way greater than us, so large you can't imagine it. Is there a fellowship in the Holy Ghost? Bigger than yourself, greater than yourself, here way long before you, so that you have a fellowship that you enter into, something you enter into in the Holy Ghost, through the Holy Ghost, that you get brought into an entire community, an entire world that is internal, that is ginormous.
Saints of God, is there any fellowship in the Holy Ghost? Yes there is. The second thing is partnership. So koinonia means partnership.
There is a partnership with the Holy Ghost that the real Christian experiences. This word means to be in a business partnership, to be joined in the same task, doing the same thing, in the same way. You're joined to the Holy Spirit in a partnership for life, throughout your entire Christian life, where you benefit his work and he benefits what you are doing.
There is an association or a union where you speak the same thing, do the same thing, go in the same direction, moving towards the same goal. Then third of all, sharing. You share a common life.
So here the fellowship or the communion of the Holy Ghost is sharing a same exact common life, to have a relationship with. It means all his resources are mine. Do you hear me tonight? That's what it means for him to be koinonia in the Holy Ghost.
You actually enter into, you share in all of his resources. Everything that he brings to the church, you get to enter into it. It becomes yours.
So this partnership, this participation with the Holy Spirit is sharing in all that he brings to us. And so all of his resources are mine. All of his characteristics become mine.
His power becomes mine. And you know what? My body becomes his vessel. So there's a mutual sharing here.
It's not just him sharing his life with me. It is me sharing my life, my talents, my mouth, my hands, my time, my provisions. It becomes the resource of the Holy Spirit, no longer mine.
And then fourthly, fellowship. It means a conversation, a close, intimate relationship where hearts, minds, thoughts, and words interact. Now, before I go into this, and I've only got two points, but in those two points, I've got about a thousand points, okay? But before we embark on my two main points here tonight, listen to what it says in John chapter 16, verse 7. Nevertheless, and this is Jesus speaking to the church, or to his disciples.
See throughout Christ's earthly ministry, he spoke very little about the person of the Holy Spirit. But as he got near the cross, and near his crucifixion, and near his departure, all of a sudden his message became consumed with the Holy Spirit. And this is what he said, chapter 16, 7. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.
It is expedient for you, the Christian, the disciple, the follower of Christ. It is expedient, necessary, vital, absolutely must be. This is Jesus who is walking with the twelve.
This is Jesus who they could see, and touch, and feel, and hear with their audible ear. They could see him. They walked with him.
They ate with him. And yet Jesus says to them, and to all the church, it is expedient for you that I go away. I've got to go away.
I must go away. It's essential that I go away. Why would he say that? For if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you.
But if I depart, I will send him unto you. Now it tells me until Christ physically left the earth, and ascended to the right hand of the Father, the Holy Spirit didn't come in a certain way. The Holy Spirit always worked on the earth.
He was always active in the earth. But here we're told that the person of the Holy Spirit is literally not going to come in a certain way until Jesus departs. So Christ has to depart.
And in fact it's essential, it's important for you that Christ goes away. Do you know what this tells me? That you gain more with the coming of the Holy Spirit than you would have if Jesus was literally abiding here in the flesh, visibly, physically, audibly in this church. You actually gain something by the Holy Spirit that you would not have with the physically present Jesus Christ.
And notice what Christ says. He calls him the comforter. He's speaking about the Holy Spirit.
Christ speaks chapters about the Holy Spirit. It's his last message to the church. He's about to leave.
So he talks continually about the person of the Holy Spirit. He wants you to be aware of the Holy Spirit. He wants you to be familiar with him.
I believe he's introducing you to the koinonia of the Holy Spirit, fellowship with the Holy Spirit or through the Holy Spirit. This word comforter is the Greek word paraklete or parakletos. It means, and this is the meaning of the word, the comforter.
It means one called alongside you to help you. It means to be your advocate, your comforter, your strength, your guide, your intercessor, the one who is with you, the one who pleads your cause, the one who is sent to you to actually be your advocate to God himself. You're here or he is here with you to represent you and to represent God to you.
So your link with God and with Jesus Christ at the right hand of the father, your link with them is the person of the Holy Spirit who Christ is going to send in his place. And he gives a full description in John chapter 14, 15, and 16. He gives a full description of the parakletos or the paraclete, the comforter, the person of the Holy Spirit, the one that's called alongside you to be the greatest help that you can ever imagine.
Are you in need here tonight? Are you struggling with something? Do you have difficulties in your walk with Jesus Christ, in your obedience, in your prayer life, reading the word of God, living right, doing the right thing, gaining power to be a witness? I want to tell you there's one being sent to be the koinonia. That's what you need. You're being brought into a whole community, a whole life, a whole partnership where someone says, I'm going to share with you everything that you need.
And yet, why is it we neglect him so? Do you realize the power isn't in you? The will isn't in you. The power is in the Holy Spirit. And listen, in these three chapters, 14, 15, and 16, he's called the paraclete four times.
And then over in 1 John, in 1 John chapter 2, verse 1, we also have this same word, paracletos. Five times it's used. John uses this word paracletos.
But do you know what he's emphasizing? That there's one called alongside you to help you. There we are thinking God tells us to do things and then tries to catch us out when we fail, marking our every step. Don't you realize God the Father sent the Holy Spirit to be everything that you cannot do? All the power is within him.
All the knowledge is within him. All the ability is within him. And yet you're saying, don't you realize I can't do this? Don't you realize that Jesus said, I have to go away.
I have to return to the Father because I must send you the Holy Spirit because he's going to be the paraclete, the one called alongside you, who'll be everything that you need. There's nothing that you need that isn't found in him, in a relationship with him. I thank God for when I was 21 years old on a mission in Romania, we were out evangelizing on the streets every day.
But one of those morning times, I walked out on that beach on the Black Sea. And I walked and I sat and I prayed. I got alone and I sat on that beach.
And I was with the Lord reading John's gospel. I just read all of John's gospel through again. And I came to these chapters and what a mighty revelation of the paraclete, of a relationship with the Holy Spirit, of the present reality of the Holy Spirit.
You know, every day for two weeks, I watched on at instantaneous miracles happening every single day on streets and high streets, hundreds of miracles that I've never seen anywhere else in my life. Every single day, day after day, blind eyes open, deaf ears open, bent legs. A little girl that had AIDS was dying of AIDS.
And we prayed for her that she'd be healed right in front of me. Her bent legs straightened right in front of me. Still to this day, it blows my mind.
My mind, it doesn't register because that's impossible. And yet since all those things were happening, but do not separate that from the knowledge of sitting on a beach, reading John's gospel and saying, oh God, this paraclete, this helper, I can't heal the sick. I can't reach the lost.
I can't lead a man to Christ. I have no power of my own self. But I tell you, it's all within the person of the Holy Spirit.
And in John 14 to 16, he is specifically called the spirit of truth. He is not a lie. He is not a deception.
He's truth. And you know what? He bears witness to this book. I want to present you tonight, the Koinonia with the Holy Ghost or with the Holy Spirit, this intimate relationship where he communes with you, he leads you, he helps you.
And I want to give you scriptures. I've got two points, but they're big points. Okay.
Two points. My first point, the Christians Koinonia with the spirit. And by that, I mean the individual Christians Koinonia with the spirit or fellowship or communion.
Then second of all, the Koinonia of the spirit in the church. So first of all, we're going to look at how this Koinonia works with an individual Christian. But second of all, how the Koinonia works in the local body as we gather together.
And I've got a lot of scriptures. I'm going to try by God's grace to condense this and give you the heart of this. But you know what? We're opening up something that's all throughout our New Testament.
That's spoken of time and time again. But it is the Koinonia of the Holy Spirit. You as an individual, you're brought in to a fellowship with the person of the Holy Spirit.
And if you live a stranger to his voice, his guidance, his personality, his indwelling, his character, his help, you're missing out on so much because he's specifically being sent to you as a gift, a throne gift of God, the gift of Calvary. If the blood hadn't been shed, he would never have done this. The spirit came because the blood was shed.
The outpoured blood means an outpoured spirit. They're both mutually in agreement. So this first point, the Christian's Koinonia with the Spirit.
Let me just list several things, and I'm only beginning. I'm only barely touching. But see tonight, I want you to realize.
I want you to be convicted tonight, not condemned. Some of you are already condemned as I speak. I want you to be convicted, and that's different.
Condemned, the devil condemns you when he says, look, you're lack, you're right. The conviction of the Holy Spirit's different. He says, look, this is where you're neglecting.
Why don't you let me help you? That's conviction, and that's the difference. So let me list several things here where we have been brought into the Koinonia of the Holy Spirit. First of all, born of the Spirit.
That's where it begins. In John chapter three, verse three and seven, Jesus uses the term born again twice. To be born again, reborn, born from above.
So the new birth is a term Jesus uses, and it's used in the epistles by Peter and John and Paul a number of other times. The term born again, and even Patrick in his two letters, he used this term. He talked of many thousands being reborn, born again as adults.
So we know that the new birth conversion is called being born again. But listen, Jesus said something else about this. In John chapter three, verse seven, he says, you must be born again.
Then in verse eight, the wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof. But thou cannot tell where it cometh from or whether it goeth to. He's speaking about this experience of being born again.
The wind, he likens it to the wind. See the wind that's blown in this storm right across Ireland over the past days. You don't really know when it's going to blow.
Sometimes over these days, it seemed like the wind was all gone. It was still, then suddenly it blew again, and then it stopped again. Where does it come from? Where does it go? You can't see it, but you can see the effect of it.
And then listen to what Jesus says concerning this wind. He says, so is everyone that is born of the Spirit. It's like the wind.
In other words, you can't explain a born again Christian. He says they're born of the Spirit. So is everyone that is born of the Spirit.
You can't explain it. You can't explain the origin. You can't explain where they're going to end up.
You know why? It's a work of the Holy Spirit. And notice the born again experience is to be born of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit birthed you.
He brought you to Christ. You didn't bring yourself. Who told you you were a sinner? Who showed you that that which you once loved, depended on, relied on, was sin and rebellion against God? Who was it that made you hate the things that you once loved and you would have given all your money away for? And yet he suddenly turns it to something despicable, hateful.
Do you know that is the work of the Holy Spirit? You know what? You were being brought into a whole new world. He brought you into Christ. Who brought you to Christ? Who told you that you needed Christ? Who showed you you needed to be forgiven, washed in the blood? Who told you that this Bible's real or that God created all things in six days? Who was it taught you all of that in one second, in one moment of time? Who was it changed your life supernaturally that you're born again? It was the work of the Spirit of God.
And so when you begin to realize we have an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, yet we're not looking for his power. We don't rely on him as we ought to. But I'm telling you there's an entire relationship, fellowship, partnership, communication and relationship with him that we neglect saints of God.
This is where your salvation began. He is the paraclete. He was sent out to get you, to rescue you from hell itself.
He's the one that instructed you and taught you about your need of Christ. Then also, secondly, is to be indwelt by the Spirit. Indwelt.
Not only born of the Spirit, indwelt by the Spirit. You see, I'm telling you, when I talk about the koinonia of the Holy Spirit, I'm talking about you being brought into a whole new world, a supernatural world, a massive world, a partnership of communion, indwelt by the Spirit. Romans chapter 8 verse 9. But ye are not in the flesh.
I'm talking about the real Christian, but in the Spirit. So a real Christian is in the Spirit. That's where you are, in the Spirit.
If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. You're in the Spirit if the Spirit dwells in you. You're in the Spirit.
You're in a whole different world. You've been brought into a different community, a different lifestyle. You've been brought into a realm where a person who was there in Genesis chapter 1, who overshadowed all of creation.
It was without form and void, but the Spirit was there brooding over. You know why? He's just about to do miracles. He's about to transform.
He's about to bring forth light. He's about to bring creation order. God spoke and said, let there be light, and there was light.
Do you see the Holy Spirit was overshadowing? He was hovering over the chaos, over the disorder. The person of the Holy Spirit, that's always where it begins things. And you know what? If he's in you, you are in him.
You can't have one without the other. So see this in Romans 8 verse 9. If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, the Holy Spirit lives in you. That isn't the baptism in the Holy Ghost.
This is the new birth, the born again experience. This is where you begin. You may be unconscious of the Holy Spirit.
You may not have been aware of him. You're not aware he's speaking to you. You just think you're dealing with men and thoughts and feelings, and yet a person is there dealing with you, a living, eternal, sovereign being, the person of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth.
And he's dealing with you, and he's striving with you, and he's speaking to you. And you don't even realize he's speaking to you. You're out there in that world.
It says, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. In other words, if you don't have the Spirit, you're not born again. Christ is not in you.
Christ is not dwelling in you unless you have the Holy Spirit. Don't get confused with the baptism in the Holy Spirit. We're talking about having the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Every real Christian has the indwelling Spirit. You may have only just got born again. The Spirit is in you, and you've been brought into the Spirit.
You're now in the Spirit. You're not only in Christ. We've taught before, in Christ, being in Christ, you're elect in Christ, justified in Christ.
You're many things in Christ. But listen, there is another world, another way to live where you are in the Spirit, and the Spirit lives in you. And you know what? If you don't have this, then you're not born again.
If you're born again, you have this. The Spirit of God dwells in you. The eternal Holy Spirit actually lives in you.
The helper, the paraclete, the intercessor, the advocate, the one with all power, he dwells in you this very night. He is the living Spirit of God. It says in John chapter 20, verse 22, and when he had said this, that is Jesus, he breathed on them, the disciples, and he said unto him, receive ye the Holy Ghost.
Do you know, the word receive means instantly, right now, this moment, doesn't mean 50 days later. It means right now, he breathed on them, said this moment, receive ye the person of the Holy Ghost. You know, before this, he'd said, the Holy Ghost is with you, but he's going to be in you.
When he was teaching them about the Holy Spirit, they hadn't experienced this yet, but they literally received the indwelling Holy Spirit, not 50 days later, but immediately. The Greek means instantly, right now, deity coming to live within you. In John 14, 17, he says, he dwelleth with you, but he shall be in you.
The Holy Spirit's going to be in you. This is true of every real, genuine Christian. The person of the Holy Spirit's in you.
Where's Jesus now? The right hand of the Father. Where's the Father? He's at the left side of the Son. He is the center of all glory.
Where is the Holy Spirit? He's here, now, dwelling in real Christians. That's literally. Do you realize that the Holy Spirit, when he was sent, took on a whole, entire, unique atmosphere and place of dwelling? Now, he's going to dwell in the real Christian.
Do you know why? Because you need him. You actually need the real Holy Spirit. You need the koinonia.
This isn't an option where you go, oh, I could enjoy some fellowship with the Holy Spirit or some theology. No, this is a practical reality. The Holy Spirit's mentioned by name about a hundred times in the New Testament.
About 50 of those times is in the book of Acts. So, in other words, if you want to understand the person of the Holy Spirit or koinonia or what it means to have this fellowship, this koinonia, or for him to be the paraclete, read the book of Acts. And when you read the book of Acts, you're getting the experience of real doctrine.
The teaching of the Holy Spirit is being worked out in the book of Acts. Third of all, led of the Spirit. When you go to Romans 7, remember where you were in Romans 6? You're crucified with Christ.
We get told about being crucified with Christ, dead to the things of the flesh. But then in Romans 7, we read about that terrible experience of the flesh in a Christian's life after they're born again. In Romans chapter 7, the law of God is mentioned constantly, and the Holy Spirit's not mentioned one single time.
But when you come to Romans chapter 8, he's mentioned 15 times in the first 16 verses. So, there's a jump from law to the Holy Spirit. There's a jump from defeat, wrestling in the flesh, trying to keep the law, to obey God, to in Romans 8, you move into a whole different realm of victory, of literally being led by the Spirit.
Listen to what it says in Romans 8, 14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. So, not only born of the Spirit, not only indwelt by the Spirit, now you're being led by the Holy Spirit.
This is not hearing voices and going, do I turn left? Do I turn right? Do I marry her? Do I marry him? Do I take this job? It's got nothing to do with that. Being led of the Spirit is far deeper. It is a person indwelling you who makes you a child of God, changes your character, who literally moves on you, makes you an entire different person.
The word to be led of the Spirit means for him to bring you, to carry you, or to drive you. In other words, when you're born again, you're being led of the Holy Spirit. There is a person, you've been brought into being in the Holy Spirit, a whole new atmosphere, a whole new society of function, a whole new community, a whole new way of living, of thinking, of being.
And you know what? In this community, you're being led of the Holy Spirit. He governs your life. He pushes, he probes, he convicts, he challenges.
And then next, we have taught by the Holy Spirit, John 16 and 12, Jesus speaking here. I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. Jesus is there physically with his chief apostles, but he says, I've got so much to communicate, so much I just want to teach and open up from the scriptures, so much to impart, but you can't handle it.
Who's he speaking to? The 12, his chief apostles, Peter, John, Matthew, and the rest. You can't take it. I'm going to have to wait until the paraclete comes.
He was so essential that Christ had to restrict his teaching and say, when he has come, you're going to have bountiful teaching opened up unto you. He says, how be it when he, the spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth. Since the Holy Spirit's been sent to help lead you, to guide you, to bring you into truth, to teach you things that Christ physically couldn't even teach the apostles.
He had to wait for the Holy Spirit. He's saying to them, I can't even teach you these things. He is going to have to lead you.
He will do what I am not going to begin to do here, because I could teach you. You can't even handle it. I need the Holy Spirit to be in you.
I need this fellowship of the Holy Spirit in place. This coining of the Holy Ghost is so vital, because it teaches you. It's the anointing in one John that he speaks of.
It's the anointing that teaches you all things. It's the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. He will guide you into all truth, for he shall not speak of himself.
That's how you tell the real Holy Ghost. Who's he going to speak about? Jesus Christ. So, the real spirit, this is how you test.
The real spirit comes to lead you into all truth. Does the spirit you interact with lead into the scriptures? Does he teach you the word of God? Does he speak of himself, or does he speak about the Lord Jesus Christ? And he says, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.
All things that the Father hath are mine. Therefore said I, he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you. He's a teacher.
What does it mean, this coining of the Holy Spirit? He's coming here to communicate. He wants to lead you into all truth. He wants to teach you.
He wants to lead you. He wants to guide you. He is here as your supreme teacher.
It doesn't mean that we don't need Bible teachers, or men in the church teaching the word of God. It doesn't mean that, but it means the Holy Spirit is here to lead you. If you allow him, if you actually allow him to lead you, to guide you, to communicate, he'll lead you into all truth.
He'll guard you from deception, and lies, and false teachings. Then next, there's the fruit of the Spirit. In Galatians chapter 5, verse 22 to 23, we read of nine fruit of the Spirit.
Listen to what it says, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law. So in dealing with your character, who you are, he mentions nine distinct fruit.
Notice what they're called. The fruit of the Spirit is love. So the fruit, this is things that grow.
Do you know these fruit grew where the Holy Spirit is? His indwelling causes things to grow. It's the fruit of the Spirit. It's his fruit.
It's his character, his nature. It's not yours, not from your old nature, not from your old lifestyle. You didn't learn it from mommy and daddy.
They didn't teach you to love like this, be meek, long-suffering, or to have the joy of the Holy Ghost. They didn't teach you that, but the Holy Spirit will teach you. This is growth, and notice it grows.
You don't have it instantaneous. Instantly, you have the person of the Holy Spirit. Instantly, you're brought into fellowship, or coining of the Holy Ghost.
But just because you're in the Spirit, and the Spirit is in you, doesn't mean all this fruit is there functioning beautifully, and having grown to maturity. No, no, no. This is the fruit of the Spirit.
Fruit grows. There's a time where fruit just begins to break through. It's got to be cultivated.
It's got to be watered. It needs sun. It needs the right seasons to travel through.
It needs to be guarded. It needs to be watched over. All of these things, it's the fruit of the Holy Spirit growing in the Christian.
And saints of God, he says, the fruit of the Spirit is love. Some Bible teachers believe that he's almost saying love embodies all of the fruit. The fruit of the Spirit is love.
Love is the essential one. If you have love, all of this will grow in you. If you don't have love, you've got nothing.
Isn't that what it says in 1 Corinthians 13? That if you have love, you have everything. Everything comes out of that. Then again, you have a walk in the Spirit.
I'm talking about the koinonia for the individual Christian. Saints, I'm only touching on this. I'm only encouraging you.
I'm only inviting you to say, this is the koinonia. This is the partnership. This is the relationship.
This is the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. You know koinonia, you don't have it without daily communication. It's a walk with a person.
You can't ignore the Holy Ghost and pick him up every three weeks or feel your need of him every several weeks. This is a person. He's got feelings.
He's got emotions. He's got thoughts. He's got desires.
He's got words. He wants to communicate to you. Every time you sit down with the Word of God, he wants to communicate to you.
He is supremely there to lead you in all truth. Who wrote this? Who inspired the 40 odd authors of the books of the Bible? One person, the Holy Spirit. He inspired this entire book.
People are there saying, speak to me, Holy Spirit. He says, I've given you this book. I've given you all these books inspired, promises, prophecies, commands, warnings, wisdom, understanding, teaching.
It's all here. Why would you neglect a book that's supremely been written by the Holy Spirit? And he says, here you are. I want to lead you into all the truth of this, living it out.
What did I say? A walk in the Spirit. Again, Galatians 5, 25. It says, if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Twice in this chapter, in verse 16 as well, it talks about a walk in the Spirit. Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. He says, if you live in the Spirit, if you're alive, born again in the Spirit, if you've been brought into this koinonia, then he says, why not walk in the Spirit? Twice here, it speaks or gives you this word, walk in the Spirit.
It's the word stotia. Listen to what it means. Walk in the Spirit.
It means to walk in step with the Spirit. So he tells you, if you're alive in the Spirit, being made alive, there is a walk that you need to walk out. And this is what it means.
It means to walk or to march like a soldier, in rank, in place, conforming to certain virtues, piety, holiness. It means to direct one's life in an orderly fashion. So to walk in the Spirit, to walk in step with the Holy Spirit, to follow the Holy Spirit, to follow his guidance, to follow his instruction.
A walk in the Spirit is you literally being shown where to walk, how to walk, when to walk. A walk in the Spirit is a partnership with him where you're not trying to create your Christian life. You never live this Christian life apart from a walk in the Spirit.
You're unified with him. You're joined with him. It's a walk in agreement with him.
Saints, God doesn't save you and then say, get on with your Christian walk. He brings you into the koinonia of the Holy Spirit. He says, I've given you someone to dwell in you.
And for you to dwell in, he'll teach you. He'll guide you. He's birthed you supernaturally.
He saved you. Now he's sanctifying you and he's instructing you. That's why it says in Ezekiel 36 concerning the new birth, the new covenant.
Listen, a new heart will I give you. Then listen to this promise. And I will put my Spirit within you.
First 26 and 27. I will put my Spirit within you. This is the new covenant, the covenant of grace in Christ.
I will put my Spirit in you and cause you to walk in my statutes. What is the key to walk in God's statutes? I will put my Spirit in you and you shall keep my judgments and do them. So what is a walk in the Spirit? It's the Holy Spirit who's been put in you.
He says, I will cause you to keep commandments. Saints, a verse like this, we don't even spend time on or meditate on. This is the new covenant promised by Ezekiel.
This is the new covenant. Then again, we're the temple of the Holy Spirit. I'm just giving you the different layers here.
The temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6 verse 19. What know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.
Your physical body, not just your mind or your spirit or your soul. He says, your body is the literal temple of the person of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own. Now notice very carefully what he's saying here.
We're talking about the paraclete or the koinone of the Holy Spirit, where you're in a relationship with him. Your body isn't your own. Your body is now the temple, the place of worship consecrated to God.
Your physical body. Your body isn't your own. And you know what he says? He says, for you're bought with a price.
What was the price? The blood of Jesus Christ. Your body has been bought. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
See, there's the koinone, this sharing. Your body is not your own. It belongs to the Holy Spirit.
It's his temple. So this koinone, this sharing, he shares his life with you. He shares his time.
He shares everything with you. You're sharing with the person of the Holy Spirit. Saints, you can't go through your Christian life day by day, unconscious of the Holy Spirit who dwells within you.
For some of you, this would bring a massive breakthrough. It would bring a consciousness of sin, a consciousness of this world, keeping yourself, purifying yourself. You would have faith to believe someone dwells in you, to make you live right, do right, to know and understand truth, to be kept in this world.
Then just one last point before we move on. Prayer by the Spirit. It says in Ephesians 6.18, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.
So prayer in the New Testament is not prayer in Paul Walsh, not prayer in Victoria, not prayer in Naomi or Dan or Andre. Prayer in yourself. Go try your best.
The Bible actually teaches that real biblical prayer is in the Spirit. When it says in the Spirit, it's giving you a sphere, a place where your prayer is to be carried out by what power, by what influence, in what atmosphere. What he's saying here, prayer and supplication, ask and request is to be in the Spirit, in the realm of the Spirit, not in you, not in your mind of all your thoughts taken over, not your emotions of unbelief.
You're to actually pray in the realm, the koinoni of the Holy Ghost. There's a community. There's a whole realm of the Holy Spirit.
Move in there to make your prayers, since not prayer in you, not prayer out of your mind and emotions and thoughts and wrestlings. You're actually to have faith and say, I'm going to pray in the Holy Ghost. Lord, you've given the Holy Spirit.
Prayer is not to be of me. It's in his realm. It's by his power.
When you pray in the Spirit, it is with a reliance upon him, his unction, his stirring, his help, his encouragement, his faith, all that he has. True prayer is exercised in the sphere of the Holy Spirit, motivated and empowered by him, controlled, led, dependent. It's his working.
He is the source of it. He knows all things. He knows everyone.
He knows what needs to be prayed. Saints of God, if we began to realize we can rely on him and trust on him and that he'll guide us and keep us in our evangelism in every area, it says in Romans 8, 26, likewise. Remember earlier it's saying you're in the Spirit.
He's in you. Then it says, likewise, as well as. Oh, it didn't just stop there.
There's more. Likewise, the Spirit also help with our infirmities for we knew not what we should pray for as we ought. None of yous are there, are yous? But the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.
Notice also, the Spirit also, he that's already in dwell in you, he's going to do more. He's going to help you pray. Saints, why are you trying to pray without a reliance on him? He says, come and pray, and you go, oh, I can't pray.
I don't know how to pray. I struggle in prayer. You're in the wrong realm.
You're reasoning in your own minds and thoughts and experience. You know what? You need faith to say, you know what? He promised me. He promised to guide me.
He promised to indwell me. He promised to teach me. No, he also promised to pray through you.
Listen to what he says. Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth, not exposes, he helpeth our infirmities, helpeth our infirmities. It's in the plural.
It means infirmities. You have many infirmities that hinder prayer, many obstructions that hinder this thing called prayer. When we come to pray, we begin to discover our infirmities.
Have you ever found this? You begin to find weaknesses, inabilities, lack of power, lack of desire, lack of concentration, lack of knowledge on how to pray. You have your body, your mind, and your emotions and circumstances around you. These are your infirmities.
What does the Bible say? He that dwells in you, he that saved you and brought you to Christ, he that guides you and leads you into all truth, he that made you a temple of the Holy Spirit, he helpeth. This word helpeth, doesn't say he turns from us. Oh, infirmities.
Okay, get on with it. Knew you couldn't be trusted. He doesn't, he helps.
Saints, you need to begin to believe this tonight. The Parakite comes with his koinonia to help us. The word means sustains us, to aid us, to support us, to supply everything we need.
He stirs us. He enables us. He inspires us.
He subdues our fears. He strengthens our hope. He draws out our hearts.
He makes us to know outside of him, we cannot have this. Utterly, definitely not. Listen, the spirit itself maketh intercession for us.
It means to intercede in behalf of others through us with groanings which cannot be uttered. What I'm telling to you is there's the koinonia of the Holy Spirit. Secondly, give me five minutes and I'll finish my second point.
The second point here is the koinonia of the Spirit in the church. I've just touched very briefly on the koinonia of the Spirit in the individual Christian, helping you pray, guiding you, keeping you, leading you into all truth, wanting to help your weaknesses, not condemning you, not tearing you down, not exposing, but saying, I am here to help you. God knew you'd have infirmities and wrestlings and difficulties.
He knew the battle that you cannot walk in the Spirit apart from him. Do you know what he says? He says, I'll give you power to crucify the flesh. If you trust me, if you have faith, if you pray to God the Father, if you believe the word of God, there's a whole koinonia where I'll give you victory over the flesh.
I'll make you to walk in the Spirit. I'll lead you through that you won't be bound by the law, but you're going to grow in the fruit of the Spirit. Saints, there's so much open to us in this if we believe the word of God.
But secondly, in the church, in 1 Corinthians 3, 16, and there's a different scripture than when he said your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 3, now he's talking about the building of the church, the local church. Listen to what he says.
Now ye know the entire body, that ye are the temple of God. Your body's the temple of God, but so is the local church. The gathered local Christians in a church, he says, ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you.
So do you say the local church is also the temple of God, the place of worship? God has created the local church, the local body with all its infirmities, all of its weaknesses, all of its frailties. Even in the New Testament churches, Paul writes to Corinth, says, two ladies, stop arguing. I'm hearing about you.
Yous are always debating. Saints, if only we realize the same things that we see in today's church, they were there in the days of the apostles, and they needed the person of the Holy Spirit to help them. They really were the temple of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit dwells in the local church. That's why every time we come together, certain things can happen that may not happen at home. Soon as you walk in that door, you come in worn down, weary, tired, embattled.
Suddenly you're here in fellowship. Something begins to happen. You haven't even made a move in your sight.
You're just here in the house of God, and something begins to stir. God begins to speak. God speaks through the prayer, or through the Lord's table, or through the preaching of the word.
Something is literally happening when the entire body comes together. If any man defiled the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
God help the man that messes with the church. God help him. I would not want to divide the church of God, cause problems in the church, stir up all sorts of things.
I wouldn't want to do it. Listen briefly to what it says about the koinonia, the literal embodied ministry of the Holy Spirit in the church. He places all of you individually in the church.
It says in 1 Corinthians 12, 13, for by one spirit are we all baptized into one body. Who does this? The Spirit. The Holy Spirit baptizes every Christian into one body.
Whether we be Jew or Gentile, whether we be bond or free, and have been all made to drink into one spirit. What he's saying here is the Holy Spirit baptizes. Not only does he take you and bring you to Christ and save you, but the same Holy Spirit that guides you into all truth, that makes you walk in the Spirit in your lifestyle, he also baptizes you into a local body of believers.
The word means to immerse, submerge, plunge you within, place you within, or drench you in the church. The Holy Spirit takes you and he literally locates you within a body of real believers. And he does away with male and female, Gentile and Jew, bond and free.
All these classifications mean nothing to the Holy Spirit. He takes you and he baptizes you. This is not the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Do you know why? Jesus baptizes you in the Spirit. This is the Spirit baptizing you in the body. He takes you and he immerses you in the body.
Your life is to be immersed in the body of Christ. Some people think, oh I'll pop in to social club. I'm very careful what I'm involved in.
I don't need the church. I can list some messages online. I'm going to tell you, God the Holy Ghost immerses you, wants you to be immersed in a spiritual family, a building, a bride, a body of Christ.
It says in verse 18, but now has God set the members, every one of them in the body as it had pleased him. God sets every person in the body. The word set means to deliberately and specifically put into a certain place in the local church.
God does that. He sets every member in the body as it has pleased him. God will do something with you in the church that you may not like, you may be not prone to, but he's actually bringing you into something very specific.
See, this is the work of the Holy Spirit. Then look again at the unity of the Spirit. So, not only being a member of the body, but the unity of the Spirit.
Says in Ephesians chapter 4 verse 3, listen, it's a command. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There's something called the unity of the Spirit.
The unity of the Spirit, it means of the Spirit. It means it's of him. There's a unity in the church that is of the Holy Spirit.
He created it. He produced it. Without him, you wouldn't maintain it.
You do not create unity in the church. Not one of you have created unity in this church. I did not create unity in this church.
The unity in this church is the unity of the Spirit. If you're in the Spirit, in the church, he has already created a unity amongst all of its members. You get it when you get born again.
You walk into unity. But do you know what? Your flesh will react against that. But the real Holy Spirit has created a unity, and it's beautiful.
The word unity means a oneness. There is a oneness in the church. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Two things he says. Endeavoring to keep. Endeavoring means to use speed or effort.
The word keep means to guard it. So, all real Christians, they don't create unity. There is a unity in the real church, created by God.
It is God-given. It is the Holy Spirit who birthed that. We're to keep it.
Then there's the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Nine gifts in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 1, it says, Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Many people in today's church are ignorant of it.
They've never studied it, never spent time in it, never prayed. My Bible says three times, be zealous for the gifts. Some people say very spiritually, you shouldn't seek the gifts, you should seek the giver.
The Bible says something else. The Bible says not just to seek the giver. It says to seek the gifts and the best gifts.
Three times it says to burn with zeal for the gifts. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. You could be ignorant through not knowing anything, not being well taught.
Or you could be ignorant through doing the wrong thing, lots of wrong teaching. But there are nine supernatural gifts. We won't go into them here.
But you know what it says? The Spirit gives these gifts. In fact, it says they're manifestations of the Spirit. The word literally means to make manifest or to reveal His presence.
You know the nine gifts are how the Holy Spirit makes His presence felt in the church. Nine supernatural gifts. Word of wisdom, word of knowledge, work in the miracles, gifts of healing, faith, discern of spirits, prophecy, kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues.
And he keeps saying, by the self-same spirit, by the Spirit. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. Are you sitting waiting saying, I don't know how to operate in gifts.
I don't have any gifts. It's the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. It's for the church, for the gathered believers, not for you personally and privately.
There are nine supernatural gifts given for public manifestation for the ediphan of other members. And they're called spiritual gifts. In other words, gifts of the Holy Spirit that are not natural.
They're not normal gifts. If you're a teacher out in the world, it doesn't mean you're a teacher in the body of Christ. If you're very discerning out in that world, you may not be in the church.
These are gifts that you cannot have naturally. Some people are naturally discerning. They say, I've got the discern of spirits.
No, you don't. Discern of spirits is an instantaneous manifestation, a shining forth of the real Holy Spirit to discern something you cannot do with your eyes, your ears, your experience, or your personal knowledge. You may be discerning, but that doesn't mean you have the discerning of spirits.
Saints, let me close with one last scripture. Jude verse 18. It talks about those that will come in the last days.
Mockers in the last time who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. Immediately, if someone's walking after their own ungodly lusts without conviction, without restraint, without concern, every Christian fails at some point. I wish it wasn't.
Every Christian feels the burning of lust, and I don't mean just sexual lust. That means strong passions of the flesh. That could be an eating or sexual lust, desires for some other thing.
It could be many things. Jealousy burning within you, unforgiveness, pride, arrogance. All of these can be the lusts of the flesh.
So he said, there's going to come those in the last days in the church, in the body of Christ who have come in sideways, and now they're all through the body, and they're sitting in our feasts of charity. Listen to what he says about them. He says three things.
These be they that separate themselves. The word separate there, it's talking about a medical term where your body's out of joint. It means to be disjointed, to remove yourself from your place in the body.
So these ruled by their own passions disjoint themselves. They separate themselves or isolate themselves. A sick sheep is always alone.
You ever see a sheep out in a field that's utterly by itself, not there running. You know sheep when they're healthy, they all run together, all jump through the heads together, all run off into the wrong field together, all go in the wrong direction together. That's a healthy sheep, but a sick sheep is isolated and alone.
So he's talking about those driven by ungodly lusts separate themselves. Secondly, they're sensual. That means they're sensual, moved by the senses, the five senses, by what they hear and see and feel.
Thirdly, they have not the Spirit. So notice here, it talks about those that are going to invade the church, the body of Christ in the last days. They're not going to have the Spirit of God.
All that I've told you so far about the Holy Spirit, they'll claim to have the Spirit, to prophesy by the Spirit, to be led of the Holy Spirit, but none of these marks are there. How many in today's world, they don't have a need for the church, a respect for the church. They don't feel they have to be at the Lord's table.
They say, I don't need the church, I can stay at home. There's something wrong with you. I understand many online who are watching us, they can't find a church.
I understand that. There's heresy abroad. It's hard to find a church of preacher.
Keep looking, keep looking. I'd rather they find a church than watch us online. But do you know what? If they can't find a church, praise God, they can listen to us here.
But I'm talking about a real believer says, I want the body of Christ. I want to search out other believers. I want to be in the house of God.
I want to break bread. I want to be in the prayer meeting. I shouldn't have to beg you to come to prayer meeting.
Shouldn't have to beg you to come and hear the word of God. Shouldn't have to beg you to come and break bread together. You know what? This is the work of the Holy Spirit, the gifts, the unity, making you a member of the body and giving you a right attitude towards the local body of believers.
All of this, do you know what it is? It's the koinonia of the Holy Spirit. One last scripture, I almost forgot this. And with this, I finish the very last verse of second Corinthians chapter 13, verse 14, two letters to Corinth.
The very last verse, listen to what it says. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion, the koinonia of the Holy Ghost be with you all. Amen.
He finishes two letters to Corinth by commending them to the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit, to the grace of Christ. Isn't the grace of God amazing? To the love of God, can you get better? To the communion of the Holy Ghost. And he says, I commit you, there's no better place I could commit you and bless you than with the grace of Jesus, the love of God, the father and the communion or the fellowship of the Holy Ghost.
It is a wonderful thing saints. And I'm just touching on this, this koinonia of the Holy Spirit. You need to become conscious of his personality, of him being with you, dwelling in you, prompting you, wanting you to live wholly, wanting you to be led into the truth of God's word, wanting to help you in your prayer life.
He doesn't despise or mock or condemn your infirmities. He says, I'm here to help you, to aid you. I don't mock you at those times or tear you down.
I come here to help you in your great weakness. I know you're filled with infirmities to live wholly, to pray, to read the word of God. And that's why Jesus Christ sent me to be the power of click, the one alongside you, in you, your helper, your advocate, your intercessor who will literally live all of this through you.
Let's pray together. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Father, I pray tonight.
Father, you say in your word that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Father, I pray that faith would be ministered into the hearts of your saints, every single individual here online, those that will watch later. Father, I pray in Jesus mighty name.
I commend the saints tonight, especially, oh God, into this koinonia of the Holy Ghost. I commend them. I bless them tonight.
I bless this church, Lord God, with the koinonia of the Holy Ghost. Father, all of the help, all of the fellowship, all of the sharing, all of the communion, all of the guide and the lead and the protect and the indwelling and them indwelling you. Lord God, I thank you for this gift of the Holy Spirit.
I thank you for the person of the Holy Spirit that he speaks, oh God, that he guides us when we don't realize it. He's indwelling us when we're not conscious of him, that he's speaking and leading and directing and proving, and Lord God, showing us how to live. Lord God, we thank you for so great a gift and forgive us tonight for our neglect.
Father, I pray tomorrow morning, Lord God, that we would arise with an awareness of the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Lord God, of this entire fellowship atmosphere, of this dwelling place. Lord God, this community with Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, with the saints of old, with the saints in heaven.
Lord God, with the saints in this church. Lord God, that you brought us into a beautiful community of the body of Christ. In Jesus' mighty name.
Amen.
