Why Look For The Living Among The Dead

The title this morning is why look for the living among the dead? Why look for the living among the dead and I want you to just think about this name something life-giving that comes from a dead source You probably can't find much and this is where the deception of the enemy comes in. We believe in a literal devil We believe in the demonic realm. You don't get caught up in it because That's not healthy but the Bible is clear about this issue and the way the great deceiver deceives is by thinking there's life in darkness that there's life and dead things and That's how he deceives a lot of people myself included right you think there's a there's I'm gonna really find fulfillment in this Why do Hollywood actors taking their life like never before comedians? Athletes are miserable After they reach you think Michael Jordan's happy.

So if I could just play the game of basketball again and They believe there's life in these dead things. I Don't know how many of you are aware of this, but there's over 4,000 religions, but only one empty tomb 4,000 religions and if I don't get to it later, I'll let you know right now a religion is man's attempt to reach up to God That's why they're formed. You can go through any but just about any religion and it's based on works I have to do this we have to do this and and that's how it's works based and and Maybe little idols little this and it's it's all works based Christianity is not a religion for that very reason.

It's God reaching down to man and Establishing that relationship and it's built on faith and faith alone. So our good works though flow out of our faith in Christ They don't save us, but they reflect they should reflect if there's no works. You might want to check your heart Because the Bible talks about faith without works is dead Faith without works is dead.

It was it was such a controversial verse of Martin Luther I didn't want to talk about it and people used it to to promote good works But it doesn't say that if you if you say you have faith, but there's no good works that means your faith is not genuine because from that genuine faith float you have to Your hearts changed you got to do something and so works don't save us, but they do reflect that commitment So remember that this morning thousands of religions but only one empty tomb and Also be careful this morning. There's a deception in things that are labeled Christianity Labeled Christianity And I won't go into details on that. You can ask me later if you want more information But just because someone says or a certain denominational type say oh, we're Christian, too If you dig into it, it's it's works based or they don't look at Jesus as God's Son the Son of God Accepting and believing him.

So be careful because you're many are looking for living things among the dead and we can't do that So Luke 24, I hope I can get through all this text But I want to just revisit what happened that fateful day But also that glorious day now on the first day of the week very early in the morning They and certain women Were with them that came to the tomb bringing spices which they had prepared. So a great question. This is important Are you seeking God early? Well, what's the big deal about that this is foundational because whatever your priority is first usually flows into the rest of the day Have you ever thought I'll get to reading the Bible later.

I got a busy day going. How does that work out later? You have to establish that foundation now, of course, there's things come up, but we seek him in the morning white It's the priority Because I found that seeking him in the morning and praying and looking the word. That's the strength for the rest of the day We need that and many people it's hard to seek God in the morning because they're filling their mind with a lot of darkness in the evening And what you go to sleep with mentally is what you wake up with as well Turn off that TV Get into the word get into a good book and wake up for that with with that hunger for God And they also they stepped out in faith who was going to roll away the stone for them It's a big stone.

They didn't have a cat bulldozer or a crane This just stepping out in faith and what a good lesson for us this morning Sometimes you just got it. You know what Lord? I don't know but I'm gonna step out in faith and trust you and I talked about that last night faith actually pleases God When we when we cower back, I don't want to knock the violin over when we cower back and we just we don't want to do anything That's not faith. That's timidity But they got there and they found the stone rolled away Already and they went in and they did not find the body of Jesus and it happened as they they were greatly perplexed I bet they were and Behold two men stood by them in shining garments then as they were afraid and they bowed their faces to the earth These angels said to them.

Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here. He is Risen risen indeed and Matthew gives us a little bit more insight at dawn the first day of the week Mary Magdalene the other Mary went to see the tomb and it actually talks about a violent earthquake and the angels actually pushing away the the stone and Then because of that what happened to the Roman guard that was supposed to be watching the tomb They Freaked out. They were completely just can you imagine? I mean, there's nothing to do against two angels Shining and pushing away who knows what that I would guess a few times to block a Wall, I mean at the hole and so they're left as dead men Because of this now, it's very interesting They still today I was just watching an interview six months ago or so with Ben Shapiro You know him that they got black hair quick talker pretty knowledgeable like he still denies Jesus and kind of makes rude comments got to pray for this guy and That they like stole the body or that he really died because he was a rebel rebel against Rome We've got some problems with that Ben all the early disciples gave their life Hung upside down cut through Speared because of a lie because they hid the body and you have the Roman Legion of soldiers who if a body escapes, they will actually lose their life and So much eyewitness accounts and so many different things if you're truly seeking They there are answers and the problem.

I know I've seen this many times many people are genuinely seeking They'll come up. Yeah, but what about this? What about this? Oh, I can tell no. No.

No, they've already made up their mind They don't want there to be a God Because it's really not about facts it's about what a person's heart is prejudiced to conclude I Don't want there to be a God. I mean I've offered you I can sit down with atheists or anybody gnostics and let's look at History, let's look at church history. Let's look at archaeological discoveries that prove the Bible historical accuracy.

No That tells me there's pride. It's a defense mechanism and So this is what's happening there at the tomb and then Jesus meant them he meant the ladies and he said greetings Greetings and they came to him and they grasped his feet and they worshiped him. I bet they did Can you imagine seeing Jesus? They fell down.

Do you know you can still do that today? Maybe nothing physically, but you can still get on your face before Almighty God You can still come to the altar. You can say Jesus. I need you.

I need something God. I'm lost I'm I'm in this place of Destitution and and depression and God I need to hear from the Living God and you grasp him that's why he said take on my burden for it is light cast all your cares upon me and Look who Jesus appeared to first Not the mighty but the humble Not the high priest, but the lowly servant Can I confess something if I was Jesus I Would have showed up right in the middle of the Sanhedrin Right in front of the high priest and I would have just mocked them Ridiculous. Thank God.

He goes he didn't even go to them. He went to the the lowly servant He went to his disciples and then from that the message spread think about that. He didn't go That we know of ever revealed himself to the religious leaders to the naysayers to Pontius Pilate Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee saying the Son of Man must be delivered Into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and the third day rise again He told them remember I told you this and they remembered his words So maybe this morning it's important for some of you to take inventory What do you need to remember this morning Do you know this can this can change your whole outlook on life? If you remember what Jesus brought you through? If you remember how precious that relationship was because he doesn't leave you we leave him We walk away From discouragement anybody get discouraged God's not answering my prayers.

Why am I going through this? And last time I mentioned we've got to come into his courts with Thanksgiving Come and come into his presence with praise and those those that critical heart will stifle spiritual growth And we begin we'll begin to drift from God. So if you remember, I mean just think we're not gonna do it But just think if we just put on worship for an hour and said Lord We're gonna we're gonna remember the goodness of God. Thank God for my little ones.

Thank God for my grandkids Thank God for the the home you provided think I don't know about you, but I told two vehicles and I'm still here one without a seatbelt Thank God, thank God he didn't leave me to myself Mocking the homeless people that could be me on that curb With that empty Jack Daniels, come on church stop coming in here acting like you got it all together We know where God brought us from We know that if it was not for the grace of God there go I and if you start to remember you start to reflect All that the joy comes back the cheerfulness comes back a heart of worship comes back It could be that the enemy has you bound because of discouragement and depression Let the Son of God set you free because who he sets free is free indeed But you have to go back and remember Remember Shane that's great. That's your opinion. But is there any Bible verse for that? Well, how much time do we have? Well, just start in Revelation when you get home just came to me.

So I'm like, oh lord. I hope there isn't Remember from where you have fallen and return Remember your first love and return That is so powerful, do you know that this church that he's addressing in Revelation lost their first love and Every time I read that I kind of like sit up straight and like wow, this is incredible. They had sound doctrines They were doing things for the Lord and that's why I caution older people and as I'm getting older myself and yet we can become bitter and angry and Missing out what God is doing in our current generation as well Return to your first love.

What is that first love? It's a passion for Christ It's a it's a passion. It's a zeal. It's a pursuit.

Oh God, I remember Do you remember when you would open the word and it would come alive? It would speak to you and and tears of joy and tears of and you could just go out you couldn't you had to tell people Jesus you had to pray you had to remove everything on your schedule and make God the priority and you return to that first love That's why the devil has some of you bound with handcuffs this morning Not physically, of course, but literally you can't worship. You can't praise Because you've you've drifted from that first love you've drifted from the Savior and And of course they returned from the tomb and they told these things to the 11 and everybody else and their words seem like Idle tales like fairy tales. They did not believe them.

I Mean, I I probably not believe them either when you oh, you saw Jesus, right? Okay Yeah, I don't know this seems too Foolish to me. Oh Peter Peter But Pete some of you need to get a Peter in you. Oh, I didn't sound too good.

But let me let me let me back him Petered out tired, right? Okay, but Peter arose and ran to the tomb So when we hate that Peter within us, we're like Lord Is this true? I've got to find out I've got to know I've got to seek you. I've got to find you I've got to at least run and pursue my God instead of becoming critical And this is why many don't believe it sounds like idle tales They just they just can't comprehend that there's a God And they believe in evolution and talk about you have more faith than me to believe in evolution. Do you agree? This big vast universe and all these planets and earth just has just the right amount of oxygen nitrogen Elements that the wash the ocean the water this that the how things work and the and now all the human body by the way Is is made of all these different things that need an oxygen and and and it just started from some single-cell Amoeba that somehow got here and it knew how to develop the kidney and heart and liver all at once because you have to have It all at once.

I mean, it's insane absolutely insane I Ordered a book and I couldn't get through the first chapter. It talks about Darwinism and health and I threw in the trash Say I'm not gonna listen to this guy Because it's insane. It's absolutely insane To think how many of you think all these chairs put themselves together? wow, look at what the well leave this church empty for a couple weeks and Impossible how much more life But again pride of the human heart.

I don't want there to be a God I'm God I'm the master of my own destiny I'm the captain of my own ship a God that requires accountability and morality No, I want to do what I want to who I want when I want how I want Pride leads to damnation and Then of course, well, you know, I'm not gonna read it but the road to Emmaus was fascinating Jesus walked with these disciples They didn't even know it was him Talking to them and then the disciples eyes are opened And it says it came to pass as he sat at the table with them He took bread blessed it broke it and gave it to them and their eyes were Opened and they knew him and then he vanished from their sight. I Would have loved to been here been there wouldn't you I? Might be a little freaked out, but it's okay. And this is why this is why 11 of the 12 original disciples how many of you don't know maybe don't raise your hand But think about they were out there were killed because of their faith Like not just some injection on the you know of something like beaten Tortured hung upside down Crucified they never denied Jesus.

I Mean that might make you want to think about this a little bit They're not gonna die for a lie because you can't say Jesus was didn't exist a Fairy-tale even Jewish historians and secular historians Roman historians all write about this man who lived it's it's credible evidence and So their eyes were opened During communion He broke the bread Just like that you had done before and so we're gonna have communion at the end of the service For believers if you're a believer you can get up and take communion, and I don't want to look too deep into this But there's something special that happens when we take of communion and We remember the body that was broken the blood that was shed It's so powerful that Paul says many of you are sick and have died because you take it in an unworthy manner Which is you know what I like my sin, I'm gonna continue doing whatever it is, but you know, it's Easter Let me take communion be careful because we're remembering what he did to free us from that sin. It's it's kind of blasphemous It's kind of like in your face. I don't care.

I'm gonna still do this So be be careful make sure your heart is right and they said to one another as Jesus was talking to them Did not our hearts burn within us? While he talked with us and he opened up the scriptures I want to encourage some of you you can get that burning in your heart as well That burning that fire his word is in your heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, but it comes with the price and that price is full surrender and So he opened up the scriptures and he explained to them everything and they told them about the things that were happening on the road But then we jumped to where Jesus appears to his disciples Jesus appears to his disciples now as they said these things Jesus himself stood in the midst of them so he's gone and then he comes back again, and he said peace to you, but they were terrified and Frightened and supposed that they had seen a spirit and he said to them. Why are you troubled? Why do you why do doubts arise in your heart behold look at my hands and look at my feet Look at me. So apparently that the marks are still there in his resurrected body handle me and see For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have another words handle me and see is the same as when The Bible talks about taste and see that God is good taste and see that God is good But that verse don't forget you got to open your mouth Not physically but you've got to receive so many people come in with hard hearts.

All right, there's a God Show me no, no, no, no God doesn't say let's make a deal. He says this is the deal taste and see Say God, I want to know if you're real Show me I want to taste and see And when he said this he showed them his hands and his feet But while they still did not believe For joy, and they marveled and then he said I love this. Have you have any food here? I don't know.

We're gonna be eating in our resurrected bodies I mean, this is interesting So they gave him a piece of broke broiled fish and some honeycomb and he took it and he ate in their presence Praise God this ends the diet debate. Jesus was a plant-based carnivore I'm kind of in the fitness spear and this topic is so loaded. Oh my goodness carnivore people think the plants are trying to kill you and plants think that the only way the only truth the only life to good Health is with plants only Never mind the fact that God fed Elijah meat and bread in the morning and evening Anyway, that's a rabbit trail.

Sorry But it's funny he ate fish and Honeycomb a honeycomb. All right back on track. Then he said to them These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you.

I told you this. Oh, I get so excited All things will be fulfilled listen you can trust God this is a this is a deposit you can take to the bank Everything might it might fail Bear Street or at Market Street, wherever they call it The stock market all the things coming out with cryptocurrency or all these other things they might fail But God will never fail fail because he says all things will be fulfilled and then he goes on just say I love this He he got Jesus himself solidifies the Word of God He says it's written in the law of Moses. It's written in the prophets It's written in the Psalms concerning me.

There is no excuse especially for the religious leaders the law of Moses Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers and Deuteronomy you can see the the serpent lifted up you can see the Passover Lamb You can see so many things about Christ in the Old Testament and then all the prophets the prophets Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel and Daniel and Joel and Amos and Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum aback all these prophetic voices Especially and then he says the Psalms all the Psalms. Oh, you know the Psalms my god my god. Why has thou forsaken me? Jesus said it on the cross quoting I believe Psalm 22 right the beginning my god my god Why have you forsaken me and it goes on to say they have mocked me.

They've mocked me and they said save yourself Save yourself if you can save others, that's exactly what happened at the cross Divided his clothes no broken bones Isaiah said as a lamb that was led to the slaughter so he opened not his mouth. Oh the fulfillment of prophecy Well, they could just wrote it later no, sorry Even the Dead Sea Scrolls proved that Isaiah was written Probably some 700 years before Jesus and it's in history that Jesus said these things That that should if you're open if you're open to God you open yourself up to everything else. Oh I better get off of that one man He said it is written and that's it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day Why was it necessary and here's what he said and that Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations beginning in Jerusalem That's why when all the critics come after me Shane you're too hard.

You're too this you're too loud You're too a hellfire and brimstone Jesus said go and preach repentance. He didn't say go preach your great best life now He said go and preach repentance for the remission of sin. I'm more on God's side than you are That's the message isn't it? That's the message of the gospel That's the message of hope to turn from sin and turn to the Living God not games not gimmicks But reverence for a holy righteous God and you are witnesses of these things Behold I send the promise of my father upon you But tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high This is another thing that separates this from all other religions because that's why I don't believe it It's a religion and I know it's kind of a hard concept.

I mean we believe in aliens. Why not believe in this, right? I believe most of what they're seeing is demonic, but that's a whole nother sermon There will be things like that in the end times. I believe demonic deceptions, but You can see you guys always get me off track at the first service But this is where and this is what I love You repent and you believe in the spirit of the Living God and Dwells you that in and of itself Lord What I don't care what happens to me on this planet.

I want the spirit of the Living God inside of me It's biblical. It's not weird. It's biblical and That's why the Bible says you can quench and grieve the spirit So once you believe you have the spirit you've been on fire You've been on fire for God if you're not careful that battle within Anybody ever face that battle within? Oh, I know all of you don't play games with me and and and the more you give in to the flesh and begin to sin drift from God discouragement delays upset wrong relationships Addictions you begin to quench and grieve the spirit and the living water no longer flows out and That's why many Christians are miserable.

I can say that because I lived it most miserable 17 years of my life From about 14 to 30. I was a Christian, but you wouldn't know it Try to go to church on Sunday, but it's hard when you sin on Saturday night Okay Come on I know not everybody's a perfect angel last night Some of you might even be a little hungover and God wants to set you free Maybe a little let me meet a little bit too many bong hits and you still have the munchies. Oh I can get deep God wants to set us free and fill that that filling of the Holy Spirit again that fullness of the Spirit and Jesus said he said it right here.

I'm gonna send the promise of my father. So go and basically wait No, tearing no promise. They had to wait for God some of you maybe need to put God back on your schedule again and Wait and begin to pursue him.

Fortunately, we don't have to wait anymore. The Holy Spirit comes upon a believer but for us We don't say I don't say before Christ anymore BC. I said BP before power Because many people are living without that spiritual power.

It doesn't mean you're perfect Follow me around but you get back on track and you keep fighting and and you're focused on the goal not the challenges and So what happened then he led them out as far as Bethany and he lifted up his hands and he blessed them Now it came to pass while he blessed them that he was parted from them and he was carried up into heaven And they worshipped him they worshipped him and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy And they were continually in the temple praising and blessing God If you're struggling with joy this morning Are you truly worshipping him? Yes worship is a lifestyle. I understand that But we're not called as Christians just to read the word and do devotional We're also called to worship and to pursue him and I love when men say well, you know what? I'm just not emotional Never heard that Well, you express anger real well You're pretty passionate about lust You're pretty excited over sports. Oh Yeah, you'll get excited.

You'll get out of that that chair You'll rate. Oh, thank God Tom Brady took us again No, you weren't on the team And we get but we do we get excited about things we get excited about things. Don't we we were emotional about about things You get a letter saying the IRS is returning ten grand.

I guarantee you're gonna get a little emotional See the problem. That's an excuse That we use To not passionately pursue our Savior. So I want to just give you this final thought If you're thinking I'm glad this message is over it's probably because you need to hear this message Looking for life and dead things.

I want to just leave you this so, you know Many people are looking for life and dead things in relationships dead relationships dead relationships Anybody in those things that are taking you down Single married doesn't matter you're trying you're trying to find life and it won't be found in dead things Break off some of those relationships that are toxic If they're taking you down, I thought that this morning I didn't want to note it, but it's it's driving here I thought of this and maybe it'll help but I came back to the Lord. It's probably I know before I met my wife probably 1999 2000 Coming back to Lord a difficult season and Doing good for about six months and a friend knocks on my door Jim and he's standing there with 240 ounce Mickey's Big Mouse Like Jim, I don't know and they talked me into it's all downhill and I had to break those things off had to What about his soul? Well five years later, we took him to Calvary Chapel on our terms looking for life and dead things dead things What about dead pursuits? I'm looking and so many people can you imagine spending all your life looking trying to pursue this trying to pursue that and you get To the end you realize all is vain all is vanity Trust me I've talked to people on their deathbed as tears flow Regretting that they pursued the wrong things. Nothing is fulfilling as that relationship with God Nothing because you can lose it all and still have him But isn't that how the enemy reels us in? If I could just I remember I wanted to retire so bad at 40 and drink Corona on the Caribbean When I was like 24 He had other plans obviously But that pursuit is it ends in death and destruction and pursue I want to any pursuit that's outside of God's will pursuing him never ends.

Well Never ends. Well, you ask millionaires at the end of their life. They're miserable Absolutely miserable Why are all these famous actors hooked on everything from Xanax to oxy? Everyone there's miserable Jim Carrey.

Have you heard his interviews? miserable Robin Williams Miserable, how did John Belushi die? How did all the I mean you I can just keep going No life there's death in that what I want to say, you know, when's there when's when people gonna wake up I'm thinking they would awake woke up after Janice Joplin Jimi Hendrix, you know, and well, we got a really no No, no, no, just consistently. It's always in the late 20s to write and just it's like obvious guys. There's no wholeness There's no life outside of your relationship with your Creator And many of you many people turn to addictions that stronghold.

They're looking for life and dead things Ask God to break that free of you this morning Listen guys, I can't tell you how many times I've prayed with people who now hooked on pain meds because the doctor recommended it It's very common now they're hooked and They're quenching and grieving the spirit. There might be a time and place for things I mean, I'll leave that to you in the Lord, but they're Life you have to go to the great healer the great physician Don't run to Johnson & Johnson Don't render don't run especially now to Pfizer. Don't don't run run to God I need to remember to edit that stuff out because YouTube will counsel me Looking for life and dead things.

What about dead religions dead religions? If your religion does not have spiritual life change your religion So many people are going through the motions and I just had to deal with this Who are you to say that that way is the right way I'm not saying this way is the right way Jesus said it He said narrow is the way broad is the road of destruction. He said I am the only way I am the only life I am the only truth. Nobody comes to the Father except through me.

You got a problem go to him You have no problem that there's no other ways to gravity 4 plus 4 is never 12. Well, that's different. How's that different? Absolute truth in Mathematics absolute truth in morality Because you realize this I realize all religions can be wrong, but they can't hold me, right? You know, we can just all get along ecumenical movement, you know about that big I think it's a temple in the in the middle men the East or what is it called? David, you know, right Saudi Arabia or something where Jews Muslims and Christians the Pope endorses it That to go and all worship together Well, that's that's that's not possible You can't all worship together you can get lunch I'm all for that But you can't come in with blasphemy The problem is when we don't know the one true and living God We allow demonic deception so you won't find life and death You will not find life and death other than Christ's death and you will not find light in darkness That's why Jesus said in John or John actually said in him was life in Him was life and the life was the light of men.

There is no other light source. There is no other truth There is no other way. It's very narrow and And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not comprehend it that's why people get upset with you Anybody ever get upset? Become a preacher just tell people about Jesus It's like you're shining the flashlight of truth into the face of darkness Expected and realize you're not arguing fighting them you're fighting that demonic stronghold The darkness cannot gain control and will never be able to eliminate the light never And now we'll close with this verse.

I Used it last Sunday. It was for this Sunday, but I said, you know what? I got it fit last Sunday as well, but Luke and Luke Jesus said these are Jesus's words So again, take it up with him. Not me.

I'm just the messenger Strived it's and it's funny. I know when people really get upset at me. They're really getting upset what God's Word says It's like hey I'm a coward.

I Won't I'm not gonna say my own. This is what this is what God's Word says. I'm a coward without the Spirit of God That's where the boldness comes from Because when you've experienced the truth and the truth has come alive in your life and the truth has set you free and the truth Do you know how terrible the husband I would be or a father? What Morgan had been gone how many years ago, I mean My kids they would all be walking away from the Lord.

I guarantee it If it wasn't for the grace of God That's why you guys you need to be careful when you criticize people during worship You don't know what God brought them through You don't know what God brought them through. I See people up here weeping. You don't you have no clue Have you ever been bound by an addiction and it's set free You might get a little excited You might not just sit there and go When's this worship over I'm hungry.

Oh Chick-fil-a is not open on Sundays, man. I Got to get home my favorite events on TV my favorite sporting event What's what's up with these people? Why is this church so emotional? Oh You'd get you just you need an experience with God the prodigal came home Mom, dad you would you be a little emotional over that? God help us God help us The devil has us bound in many areas there should be an excitement a pursuit of God and Jesus said you have to strive to enter to that narrow gate for many I say to you they will seek to enter and they will not be able to enter Quick crash course on these words Strive is where we get our word agonized from it's it's it's not a workspace It's it's you're you're really when you repent and believe you're fighting against the pull of the flesh Because the flesh says no stay in darkness. You can go watch a great movie at Cinemark in darkness and be so oh, this is great It's feeding that darkness. But when you get into church, there's an oppression.
