γάζα [page 120] For this word we may cite the interesting inscription discovered at Adule on the African coast of the Red Sea, in which the conquests of Ptolemy III in the Eastern Provinces, including Babylon and Persia, are recounted OGIS 54 .22 (2nd half of iii/B.C.) καὶ ἀναζητήσας ὅσα ὑπὸ τῶν Περσῶν ἱερὰ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἐξήχθη καὶ ἀνακομίσας μετὰ τῆς ἄλλης γάζης τῆς ἀπὸ τῶν τόπων εἰς Αἴγυπτον δυνάμεις ἀπέστειλεν . The statement that the noun, borrowed in Greek in iv/B.C., was a Persian word for the King s treasury, depends on Curtius (see Grimm) : the Middle Persian ganj has the required meaning, and can be shown to descend from the same original, as Dr Louis H.
