to take hold of, to grasp, to grab to take hold of something or someone, with or without force A number of languages differ radically in terms for ‘taking hold of,’ depending upon whether force is employed, whether the object is a thing or an animate being, and whether the language incorporates into a verb of ‘taking hold of’ a classification as to the objects involved, for example, long and thin, round and flat, ball-like, angular, or lumpy.
1 There may be some subtle distinction in meaning between δέχομαι[a] on the one hand and λαμβάνω[c] and λῆμψις on the other, in that the latter set of meanings may imply more active participation on the part of the one who receives or takes the gift, but this cannot be determined from existing contexts. 2 There are no doubt certain contextual constraints involved in the choice of ἀναδέχομαι[a], ἀποδέχομαι[a], ἐπιδέχομαι[a], εἰσδέχομαι, ὑποδέχομαι, προσδέχομαι[b], and παραδέχομαι[b] in the sense that the spacial relationships involved in the welcoming of a guest can be reflected in the prepositional prefixes. For example, in LUK 8:40 the use of ἀποδέχομαι may focus upon the particular source, while ἐπιδέχομαι in 3JN 1:10 may be relevant in view of the fact that the believers are coming to a particular point. προσδέχομαι in LUK 15:2 may suggest a kind of reciprocal relationship which is established with outcasts, and παραδέχομαι in ACT 15:4 may simply point to spacial proximity. However, it would be wrong to insist upon clear distinctions in meaning based on the very limited number of contexts involved. Some of these same distinctions in spacial relations may exist for the set προσλαμβάνω[e], παραλαμβάνω[d], ἀπολαμβάνω[d]. 3 LUK 22:17 It is possible that δέχομαι in LUK 22:17 may mean ‘to receive’ (see 57.125).

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
δέχομαι. This common verb hardly needs illustration, but we may note P Hib I. 70 (a)? (Bc. 229-8) δέξαι παρὰ Ζωίλου . . . (δραχμὰς) δέκα, P Tebt 11. 2811 (p.c. 125) δέδεγμαι παρὰ σοῦ ἐκ πλήρους ἄνευ παντὸς λοιπήματος, “1 have received from you the sum in full without any arrears” (Edd.), tb. 422" (iii/A.p,) δέξε map’ αὐτοῦ tas (δραχμὰς) p, and from the early Christian letter P Heid 629 (iv/a.D.) (= Selections, p. 127) καταξίωσον δέξεσθαι τὸ μικρὸν ἐλέου διὰ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ ἡμῶν Μαγαρίου. It is often ured of receiving letters, as P Flor 11. 1542 (a.D. 268) ἅμα τῷ δέξασθαί μου τὰ [γράμματα δήλωσόν μοι κτὰλ., BGU IV. 1208** (B.c. 27) αὐτὸ (sc. τὸ πιττάκιον) ἐδεξάμην, where it seems to imply (ΕἾ accepted it.” Abbott (Jok. Voc. p. 220, Fourfold Gospel p. 229) has drawn attention to the fact that δέχομαι occurs only once in the Fourth Gospel, 4*°, where it is used of the Galilwans’ [hospitable] reception of Jesus in His native place. When Jn (137°) gives a version of the Logion of Mt 10%, he substitutes 6 λαμβάνων for ὁ δεχόμενος, the inferiority of which as Greek is sufficient evidence of its independence. Aéxopat with a personal object may be quoted
