Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
διαιρέω [page 149]
Division between two or more parties, as in Luk_15:12 , is the ordinary force of the word. Thus in a iii/B.C. inscr. in Ἀθηνᾶ xx. p. 167 ἀγρὸς . . ὃν ἔλαβεν διαιρούμενος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφόν , P Magd 29 .4 (B.C. 218) διαιρέσεως γενομένης καὶ συγγρ [α ]φῆς τεθείσης διειρῆσθαι ἴσως καὶ ὁμοίως , οὐ διείρηταί μοι δικαίως of a division of land that had not been carried through justly : cf. BGU IV. 1123 .8 (time of Augustus) διαιρεθήσεται εἰς μέ [ρη ] ἴσα καὶ ὅμοια τρία , καὶ λήμψεται ἕκαστ [ο ]ς ἡμῶν μέρος ἕν , P Oxy X. 1278 .10 (A.D. 214) διειρῆσθαι π [ρὸ ]ς ἑαυτοὺς τὴν καρπείαν , have divided among themselves the usufruct, and OGIS 573 .24 (i/A.D.) διαιρείτωι δ ὁ ἱερεὺς τὰ (ε )ἰσφερόμενα τῶι θεῶι εἰς κατασκευὴν τοῦ τόπου , where the editor remarks that verbum notionem distribuendae pecuniae in diversas expensas quibus opus sit habere videtur. With the dat. as in Lk l. c. cf. P Lond 880 .11 (B.C. 113) (= III. p. 9) ὁμολογεῖ . . διειρῆσθαι τὰ ὑπάρχοντα [αὐ ]τῶι ἔγγαια τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ υἱοῖς . The construction with πρός is commoner. The more general sense of distribute, as in 1Co_12:11 , may be seen in the Will of Epicteta, Michel 1001 vi. 18 ( c. B.C. 200) οἱ ( sc. ὁ ) δὲ ἀρτυτὴρ διελεῖ τὰ ἱερὰ τοῖς παροῦσι . For the middle in the same sense cf. Syll 229 .19 (iii/B.C.) διείλοντο τὸ ἀργύριον the meaning is practically = διεῖλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους . In ib. 831 .7 πάντα ἃ ἔχε [ι ] διελόμενος Νικήρατος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφόν this will not apply.
