Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
διασαφέω [page 153]
For this verb, common in the earlier papyri, we may cite P Eleph 18 .3 (B.C. 223 22) κ [α ]λῶς ποιήσεις διασαφήσας ἡμῖν , ὅπως ἐπιτελέσωμεν κτλ ., P Lond 42 .8 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30. Selections , p. 9) ἐπιστολὴν . . ἐν ἧι διεσάφεις εἶναι ἐν κατοχῆι ἐν τῶι Σαραπιείωι , P Par 42 .10 (B.C. 156) διασάφησόν μοι , ib. 45 .3 (B.C. 153) ἅ σ [οι ] οὐ δεδύνημαι διασαφῆσαι διὰ τοῦ ἐπιστολίου , P Grenf II. 33 .11 (B.C. 100) περὶ τοῦ διασαφουμένου μέρους γῆς , and from the inscriptions Syll 790 .57 (i/B.C.) ἐν τῶι ψηφίσματι διασαφεῖται τῶι κεκ [υ ]ρωμένωι περὶ τοῦ [μαν ]τείου ἐφ᾽ ἱερέως Κρίνωνος . If we may judge from the contrast between papyri B.C. and A.D., the verb went out of common vernacular use during the NT period, which would account for the curious fact that only one NT writer (Mt) uses it at all. It occurs however five times in Vettius Valens.
