Joined with nouns denoting strength, faculty, power, virtue, δίδωμι (τίνι τί) is equivalent to: to furnish, endue, (one with a thing): Luk_21:15 (δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καί σοφίαν); Act_7:10; ἐξουσίαν, Mat_9:8; Mat_10:1; Luk_10:19; Joh_17:2; Rev_2:26; Rev_6:8; Rev_13:7; διάνοιαν, 1Jn_5:20; σύνεσιν, 2Ti_2:7; and in the very common phrase διδόναι τό πνεῦμα. (I'. διδόναι τίνι τίνος to give to one (a part) of etc.: Rev_2:17 (G L T Tr WH) δώσω αὐτῷ τοῦ μάννα, cf. Winers Grammar, 198 (186); Buttmann, 159 (139).) II. δίδωμι τί without a dative, and δίδωμι τινα. 1. δίδωμι τί; a. with the force of to cause, produce, give forth from oneself: ὑετόν, from heaven, Jas_5:18; καρπόν, Mat_13:8; Mar_4:7-8 f (Deu_25:19; Sir_23:25); σημεῖα, Mat_24:24; Mar_13:22 (not Tdf.); Act_2:19 (Exo_7:9; Deu_13:1, etc.); ὑπόδειγμα, Joh_13:15; φέγγος, Mat_24:29; Mar_13:24 (φῶς, Isa_13:10); φωνήν, 1Co_14:7 f; διά τῆς γλώσσης λόγον, 1Co_14:9; γνώμην, to give one's opinion, to give advice, 1Co_7:25; 2Co_8:10. b. διδόναι κλήρους (βΜεψΘμ πΘϊΗο, Lev_16:8), to give, i. e. hand out lots, namely, to be cast into the urn (see κλῆρος, 1), Act_1:26. c. δίδωμι τί with the predicate accusative: Mat_20:28; Mar_10:45 (to give up as a λύτρον); Mat_16:26; Mar_8:37 (to pay as an equivalent). 2. δίδωμι τινα; a. where the noun refers to the office one bears, to appoint: κριτάς, Act_13:20. b. to cause to come forth: δίδωμι ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς τοῦ Σατανᾶ τῶν λεγόντων (namely, τινας (cf. Buttmann, 158 (138); Winer's Grammar, § 59, 4 b.)), Rev_3:9; so also the sea, death, Hades, are said to give (up) the dead who have been engulfed or received by them, Rev_20:13. 3. δίδωμι τινα τίνι; a. to give one to some one as his own: as the object of his saving care, Heb_2:13; to give one to someone, to follow him as a leader and master, Joh_6:37; Joh_6:39; Joh_10:29; Joh_17:6; Joh_17:9; Joh_17:12 (but see B. I. 4. c. aa. above), ; ; in these passages God is said to have given certain men to Christ, i. e. to have disposed them to acknowledge Christ as the author and medium of their salvation, and to enter into intimate relations with him, hence Christ calls them 'his own' (τά ἐμά, Joh_10:14). b. to give one to some one to care for his interests: Joh_3:16 (ἔδωκεν namely, αὐτῷ, i. e. τῷ κόσμῳ); Act_13:21. c. to give one to some one to whom he already belonged, to return: Luk_7:15 ( ἀπεδωκε (so L marginal reading in Luk_7:15)). d. δίδωμι ἐμαυτόν τίνι, to one demanding of me something, I give myself up as it were; an hyperbole for disregarding entirely my private interests, I give as much as ever I can: 2Co_8:5. 4. δίδωμι τινα with a predicate accusative: ἑαυτόν τύπον, to render or set forth oneself as an example, 2Th_3:9; with a predicate of dignity, office, function, and a dative of the person added for whose benefit some one invested with said dignity or office is given, that is, is bestowed: αὐτόν ἔδωκεν κεφαλήν ὑπέρ πάντα τῇ ἐκκλησία, head over all things to the church, Eph_1:22; ἔδωκεν τούς μέν ἀποστόλους κτλ., namely, τῇ ἐκκλησία, Eph_4:11. For in neither of these passages are we obliged, with many interpreters, to translate the word appointed, made, after the use of the Hebrew πΘϊΗο; especially since in the second Paul seems wish to confirm the words quoted in Eph_4:8, ἔδωκε δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. Those in the church whom Christ has endued with gifts and functions for the common advantage the apostle reckons among the δόματα given by him after his ascension to heaven. III. Buttmann, 265 (228)); by a construction borrowed from the Hebrew, καί δώσω τοῖς ... καί προφητεύσουσι, Rev_11:3; in the passive, Mat_13:12; Mar_4:11 (ὑμῖν δέδοται γνῶναι (G L T Tr WH omit γνῶναι) to you it has been granted etc.); followed by the accusative and the infinitive: δῴη (L T Tr WH δῷ) ὑμῖν ... κατοικῆσαι τόν Χριστόν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν, Eph_3:16 f; ἔδωκεν αὐτόν ἐμφανῆ γενέσθαι, Act_10:40; οὐ δώσεις τόν ὅσιον σου ἰδεῖν διαφθοράν (from Psalm 15:10 (), Act_2:27; Act_13:35. 2. δίδωμι τίνι, followed by ἵνα, to grant or permit, that, etc. (Buttmann, 238 (205) Winer's Grammar, 337 (316), cf. 545 (507)): Mar_10:37; Rev_19:8. to commission, Rev_9:5. IV. δίδωμι τί, or τίνι τί, or τίνι or τινα, followed by a preposition with a noun (or pronoun); 1. τίνι ἐκ τίνος (cf. Winers Grammar, § 28, 1; Buttmann, 159 (139)): δότε ἡμῖν (a part) ἐκ τοῦ ἐλαίου ὑμῶν, Mat_25:8; ἐκ τῶν ἄρτων, easily to be supplied from the context, Mar_2:26; Luk_6:4; ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν, 1Jn_4:13; otherwise in Joh_3:34 ὁ Θεός οὐ δίδωσι τό πνεῦμα ἐκ μέτρου, by measure, i. e. according to measure, moderately (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 51, 1 d.); otherwise in Rev_3:9 δίδωμι ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς (see II. 2 b. above). τίνι ἀπό τίνος: Luk_20:10 ἵνα ἀπό τί καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος δῶσιν (L T Tr WH δώσουσιν) αὐτῷ, namely, the portion due. Τί followed by εἰς with a noun, to give something to put into, Luk_6:38 μέτρον δώσουσιν εἰς τόν κόλπον ὑμῶν (shall they give, i. e. pour into your bosom), or upon, Luk_15:22 δότε δακτύλιον εἰς τήν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ (put a ring on his hand); εἰς τόν ἀγρόν, for the field, to pay its price, Mat_27:10; τίνι τί εἰς τάς χεῖρας, to commit a thing to one, deliver it into one's power: Joh_13:3 (Hebrew τΜ αΐΜιΗγ πΘϊΗο, Gen_9:2; Gen_14:20; Exo_4:21); εἰς τήν διάνοιαν, or ἐπί τάς καρδίας (Jeremiah 38:33 ()), put into the mind, fasten upon the heart, Heb_8:10; Heb_10:16; or εἰς τῆς καρδίας with an infinitive of the thing, Rev_17:17; (Xenophon, Cyril 8, 2, 20 διδόναι τίνι τί εἰς τήν ψυχήν). ἑαυτόν διδόναι εἰς with the accusative of place, to betake oneself somewhere, to go into some place: Act_19:31 (εἰς τόπους παραβολους, Polybius 5, 14, 9; εἰς τόπους τραχεῖς, Diodorus 14, 81; εἰς τάς ἐρημίας, Diodorus 5, 59; Josephus, Antiquities 15, 7, 7; εἰς κώμην τινα, Josephus, Antiquities 7, 9, 7). 2. δίδωμι τί ἐν τίνι, i. e. to be or remain in, so that it is in (cf. P Oxy X. 1281 .9 (a loan A.D. 21) ἐφ᾽ ὧι̣ κ̣ο̣μ̣ι̣ζ̣ομέν̣ου̣ [τοῦ ] Ἰωσήπου ταῦτα πρότερον δώσει λόγ̣ο̣[ν ] τούτων , on condition that when Joseph receives it he shall first render an account of it (Edd.), P Strass I. 32 .9 (A.D. 261) δότω λόγον , τί αὐτῷ ὀφείλ [ε ]ται καὶ ποῦ παρέσχεν , ἵνα οὕτως αὐτῷ ἐνλογηθῇ Lest Act_13:20 should be supposed a Hebraism, after (e.g.) Num_14:4 , we may quote P Lille I. 28 .11 (iii/B.C.) αὐτοῖς ἐδώκαμεν μεσίτην Δωρ [ί ]ων [α , nous leur avons donnι pour arbitre Dorion (Edd.), P Flor I. 2 .52 (A.D. 265) δίδομεν καὶ προσαγγέλλομεν τὸν ὑπογεγραμμένον εἰς δεσμοφυλακείαν : cf. ib. 91 .3 (ii/A.D.) ἐδόθην εἰς ἑ [τέραν αὖ λιτουργία ]ν , and P Oxy IX. 1195 .1 (A.D. 135) Ἀπολλωνίωι κριτῆι δοθέντι ὑπὸ Πετρωνίου Μαμερτείνου τοῦ κρατίστου ἡγεμόνος . Similarly Deissmann ( LAE , P. 117) disposes of the Latinism in Luk_12:58 by reference to a letter of B.C. 2 written in vulgar Greek, P Oxy IV. 742 .14 δὸς ἐργασία [ν , give your attention to it, and to the occurrence of the same phrase in the unpublished P Bremen 18 ( c. A.D. 118). He also cites OGIS 441 .109 (B.C. 81) φροντίζωσιν διδῶσίν τε ἐργασίαν , may they take heed and give diligence (but see Dittenberger s note). Herwerden ( Lex. s.v. ) illustrates the elliptical use (e.g. Rev_2:23 ) from Rev. pap. Lips. 13 iii. 3 ὁ ἄλλος λίθῳ δέδωκεν τῷ υἱῷ μου , sc. πληγήν : cf. our he gave it him with a stick. For δίδωμι ἐμαυτόν τινι or ὑπέρ τινος (as 2Co_8:5 , Tit_2:14 ) cf. P Par 47 .26 ( c. B.C. 153) (= Witkowski .2 , p. 90) ἰ καὶ αὑτοὺς δεδώκαμεν καὶ ἀποπεπτώκαμεν ὑπὸ τῶν θεῶν καὶ πιστεύοντες τὰ ἐνύπνια , and see Nδgeli, p. 56. There is a suggestive use of δ . in the question addressed to an oracle, P Oxy IX. 1213 .4 (ii/A.D.) ἀξιοῖ Μένανδρος [εἰ ] δέδοταί μοι γαμῆσαι ; [τοῦ ]τό μοι δός M. asks, is it granted me to marry? Answer me this (Ed.), so Wessely Spec.gr. 12, 26 εἶ οὐ [δέ ]δοταί μοι συμβιῶσαι Ταπεθεῦ [τι ; (cf. Archiv v. p. 232). There is the same collocation of verbs in Mat_19:11 , where it is implied that there are those οἶς οὐ δέδοται . For δός at the end of the first oracle cf. P Oxy VIII. 1149 .9 (ii/A.D.) : it answers to τοῦτό μοι σύμφωνον ἔνενκε in ib. 1148 .9 , and κύρωσ [όν ] μοι τοῦτο τὸ γραπτόν in Wessely s oracle. Δὸς πεῖν (as in Joh_4:7 ) may be cited from P Leid W viii. 9 (ii/iii A.D.). On the forms of this verb, which was rapidly coming over into the -ω class, like other -μι verbs in the Hellenistic age cf. MGr δίδω , δίνω or δώνω see BS , p. 192, CR xv. pp. 37 f., 436, xviii. pp. 111 f., and the editor s note on P Oxy VII. 1053 .13 . On ib. 1066 .12 (iii/A.D.) ἔλεγέν μοι Ἀπόλλων ὅτι οὐδέν μοι ἔδωσεν , attention is drawn to ἔδωσεν as a rather early instance of the sigmatic form which is occasionally found in writers of the decadence.

"to give" one leave to speak, Xen. ; but, δ. λόγον ἑαυτῶι "to deliberate", Hdt. c. acc. pers. "to give over, deliver up", Hom. , etc. of parents, "to give" their daughter "to wife", id=Hom. in attic, διδόναι τινά τινι "to grant" any one to entreaties, "pardon" him, Xen. :— διδόναι τινί τι "to forgive" one a thing, "remit" its punishment, Eur. , Dem. διδόναι ἑαυτόν τινι "to give" oneself "up", Hdt. , etc. δ.δίκην, v. δίκη IV. 3. in vows and prayers, c. acc. pers. et inf. "to grant, allow, bring about that", Hom. , Trag. seemingly intr. "to give oneself up, devote oneself", τινί Eur.
