Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
δοξάζω. The verb is found in the sepulchral epitaph ot ἃ yzmus, already cited s.v. δεισιδαίμων, Aabe/ 6077 (ili/A.D.) εὐφρανθεὶς ἐφ᾽ ὅσον μοῖραι χρόνον ὥρισαν αὐτῷ. εὐσεβίης ἕνεκεν δοξασθεὶς καὶ μετὰ λήθην. As illustrating the NT usage of this word, the following invocation from the magical papyrus P Lond 121° (jii/a.p.) (=I. p. 100) is noteworthy—kvpla “Iows . . . δόξασόν por (for pe), ὡς ἐδόξασα τὸ (ὄνομα) τοῦ υἱοῦ (pap. viots) σου “Ὥρου : cf. Reitzenstein Poimandres, p. 22 n°. See Anz Subsidia, p. 356. A further magical quotation was given above under δόξα. Grimm’s ‘fuse not found in prof. writ.,”’ viz. ‘‘to etc., disappears from that make glorious, adorn with lustre” category, as we might expect: cf. also OG/S 168° (B.C. 115) ἐν ᾿Εἰλ]εφαντίνηι ἱεροῦ δεδοξασμένου ἐξ ἀρχαίων καὶ [. . - The verb survives in MGr, with partic. δοξασμένος as an adj., ‘‘celebrated.”’ Aooxas is found as a feminine name among both Greeks and Jews (see Knowling ad Ac 98 in £G7). An interesting example is afforded by a Delphic inscription of ii/B.c., Sy// 8541) 12, where a certain Alexon entrusts the care of a manumitted slave of this name to one Thracidas—rtpep]éro Θραικίδας Δορκάδα, εἴ κα θέλῃ [oliketv ἐν τα[ὑ]τῶι ~ εἰ δὲ μή, ἐνβαλλέτω Θραικίδας Δορκάδι τροφὰν τοῦ μηνὸς ἑκάστου πυρῶν τέσσαρα ἡμίεκτα KTA. See also Deissmann AS, p. 189, ZNTV i. p. 88. The diminutive, which is found in LXX Isai 13!4, occurs in a papyrus letter P Iond 4134 (c. A.p. 346) (= II. p. 302), complaining of the gazelles which are spoiling the writer’s crops— ἐπιδὴ τὰ δορκάδι[α] ἀφανίζουσειν τὸ (1. τὰ) σπόριμα.
