UBS Dictionary of the Greek New Testament
verb | φανίζω
24.19 · Sensory Events and States · See
to make appear, to make visible, to cause to be seen to cause to become visible
28.36 · Know · Well Known, Clearly Shown, Revealed
to make known, to make plain, to reveal, to bring to the light, to disclose, revelation to cause something to be fully known by revealing clearly and in some detail For another interpretation of ἐμφανίζω in ACT 23:22, see 33.208.
1 All of these meanings involve a shift from the sensory domain of seeing, causing to see, or giving light to, to the cognitive domain of making something fully known, evident, and clear. 2 JHN 14:21 In JHN 14:21 it is difficult to know precisely the manner or extent of the revealing represented by the verb ἐμφανίζω. It would seem that cognitive awareness or knowledge about is far more likely than any physical or visual appearance. 3 ἀγγέλλω appears to be more generic in meaning than a term such as ἐμφανίζω[c] (33.208), but it is difficult to indicate in all instances the various aspects of denotation and connotation associated with the meanings in this subdomain.
