ἔνδοξος. An interesting example of this adj. is found in a letter from the Emperor Vespasian confirming certain privileges bestowed on an athletic club by the Emperor Claudius, P Lond 1178*4 (a.p. 194) (=TIII. p. 216) εἰδὼς ὑμῶν τῶν ἀθλητῶν τὸ ἔνδοξον Kal φιλότειμον πάντα ὅσα [καὶ] ὁ Κλαύδιος αἰτησαμένοις ὑμεῖν συνεχώρησε καὶ αὐτὸς φυλάττειν [π]ροαϊιροῦμαι. In P Leid W*'¥-9 (ii/iii A.D.) we have an invocation which runs—Baowred βασιλέων. . . ἔνδοξο (/.—e) ἐνδοξοτάτων, and in the curious mantic text P Ryl I. 28198 (iv/A.b.) the twitching of the right leg is said to portend that the man will ‘* become illustrious ἡ - γενέσθαι ἔνδοξον. In P Oxy VI. 9434 (vi/a.p.) an agreement is reached τῷ ἐνδόξῳ οἴκῳ regarding the payment of certain dues. For the adverb we may cite OGZS 513} (iii/A.D.) where a priestess is described—tepacapévny ἐνδόξως καὶ μεγαλοπρεπῶς: cf. Aazbe/ 358° ζήσασα ἐνδόξως.
