ἔνι. BGU IV. 11418 (B.c. 14) ὅτι δὲ ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ μου ἐπιστολῇ οὐθὲν ἁμάρτημα ever (1. ἔνι), P Oxy IX. 1218° (iii/A.D.) οὐδὲν ϑύσκολον ἔνι ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας σου. In P Iand 118 (iii/A.D.) ὅτι ἀπρ]έπιά ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἔνι, the editor renders οὐκ ἔνι ‘‘fierz non potest,” and compares P Strass I. 3519 (iv/v A.D.) φρόντ[ι]σόν μου δὲ περὶ τῶν ἐλεῶν .... ἐπιδὴ ἐν ᾿Αλεξανδρίᾳ οὐκ ἔνει. The above exx. show tyu = ἔνεστι, and practically equivalent in meaning to the simple ἐστί, cf. Sir 372, 4 Macc 472, and see Thackeray Gr. i. p. 257. The form ἔνι is regarded as the prep. ἐνί, the Ionic form of ἐν, ‘‘strengthened by a more vigorous accent, like ἔπι, πάρα, and used with an ellipsis of the substantive verb” (Lightfoot on Gal 355; cf. Hort on Jas 117). See also Boisacq, p. 247 n.*, Dieterich Untersuch. p. 225.

II. to be possible, ἄρνησις οὐκ ἔ. ὧν ἀνιστορεῖς [Refs 5th c.BC+]; τίς δ᾽ ἔνεστί μοι λόγο; what plea is possible for me [to make]? [Refs 5th c.BC+]

II.2. impersonal, with dative person et infinitive, it is in one's power, [Refs 5th c.BC+]: with infinitive only, οὔκουν ἔ. καὶ μεταγνῶνα; [Refs 4th c.BC+]; οὐκ ἔνεστι it is not possible, [Refs 4th c.BC+]; ὃ μὴ νεώς γε τῆς ἐμῆς ἔνι which it is not possible [to get] from my ship, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; ὡς ἔνι ἥδιστα in the pleasantest way possible, [Refs 5th c.BC+]: imperfect, ὡς ἐνῆν ἄριστα [Refs 2nd c.AD+]
