homestead, house, residence property in which a person was expected to reside, either as the result of ownership or legal contract In the NT ἔπαυλις occurs only in ACT 1:20 as a quotation of PSA 69:25. The immediate reference is to a person’s traditional residence, but the entire passage must be interpreted figuratively as a reference to a person’s expected position or place of service. The phrase γενηθήτω ἡ ἔπαυλις αὐτοῦ ἔρημος may be rendered as ‘may his house become empty’ or ‘may his home be deserted.’

ἔπαυλις. This NT ἅπ. εἰρ. (Ac 1°° from Ps 68(69)35) may be illustrated froma property-return, P Oxy II. 248*8 (A.p. 80), where mention is made of δίμοιρον μέρος τετάρτου pépov[s] κοινωνικῆς ἐπαύλεως συνπεπίτω]κυίας, ““ἃ common homestead that is in a state of ruin”: cf. P Ryl II. 17. (A.D. 246) λιβὸς ἔπαυλ[ις Φοιϊβάμμωνος Τρύφωνος, ‘on the west the homestead of Phoebammon son of Tryphon,” and P Hamb 1. 2318 (A.D. 569) καὶ οἰκίᾳ καὶ ἐπαύλιδι | (contrast ἐπαύλεως ‘swfra), with the editor's note, where other instances are collected. From the inscrr. we may add Syli 510% §8 (ii/B.c.), and for the diminutive OG/S 765 (ili/B.C.) τά τε ἐϊπαύλια ἐνέπ[ρη]σαν.
