Epicurean, a follower of Epicurus pertaining to the philosophical system of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, who taught that the world is a series of fortuitous combinations of atoms and that the highest good is pleasure In most instances translators have found it more satisfactory to simply transliterate the terms Ἐπικούρειος and Στοϊκός (11.97), but some supplementary note to identify the teachings of the Epicureans and Stoics is important.
