responsibility for, concern for, care of responsibility for oversight based upon authority Though one might regard ἐπίστασις as meaning only the position of authority, nevertheless this authority is expressed in terms of the oversight and care of others. In a sense the meaning of ἐπίστασις in 2CO 11:28 is defined by the following appositional phrase, ἡ μέριμνα πασῶν τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν ‘concern for all the churches.’ For another interpretation of ἐπίστασις in 2CO 11:28, see 25.239.

Hence 1. a hostile banding together or concourse: ποιεῖν ἐπισύστασιν, to excite a riotous gathering of the people, make a mob, Acts xxiv. 12 RG; 1 Esdr. v. 70 Alex.; Sext. Empir. adv. eth. p. 127 [p.571, 20 ed. Bekk.; cf. Philo in Flac. § 1]; τινός, against one, Num. xxvi. 9; a conspiracy, Joseph. c. Ap. 1, 20. 2. a troublesome throng of persons seeking help, counsel, comfort: τινός, thronging to one, 2 Co. xi. 28 R G (see ἐπίστασις) ; Luther, dass ich werde angelaufen.

ἐπισύστασις. This word which is found in the LXX (Numb τό, 269, and 1 Esdr 573 A) and in the received text of Ac 241", 2 Cor 1128, may be illustrated from Sy// 32527 (i/B.c.) διὰ τὰς τῶν κρατούντων τῆς χώρας βαρβάρων ἐπισυνστάσεις, where the thought of ‘‘ hostile”? combination is prominent: see further Field Notes, p. 185f. On the other hand the verb is sometimes used practically = ‘‘ appoint,” as when certain πρεσβύτεροι of the village of Karanis grant one of their number a certificate stating that they had appointed him their deputy in the collection of the beer-tax—P Lond 255} (Α.Ὁ. 136) (=I. p. 117) ἐπισυνεστάκαμέν σοι ἀνθ᾽ ὑμῶν (1. ἡμῶν) πρακτορεύιν (1 - εἰν) κίαὶ) χιρίζιν (/. χειρίζειν) τὴν δὲ ἵντηράν κτλ. : cf. 26. 3068 (Α.}. 145) (= II. p. 118) τὸν [δ]μολογοῦντα συνεστακέναι τὸν Σια[το]ρνίλον πρακτορεύοντα.
