1 There are no doubt certain subtle distinctions, particularly of emphasis, in the series τελέω, ἐκτελέω[a], ἀποτελέω, ἐπιτελέω[a], συντελέω[a], and τελειόω[c], but it is not possible to determine with precision the particular distinctions on the basis of existing contexts, though possibly ἐκτελέω and ἀποτελέω emphasize more finality, while ἐπιτελέω[a] may focus upon the resulting purpose.

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For this verb in connexion with the performance of religious duties cf. P Leid G#! II. 294"! (A.D. 146) τὰ τῇ προφητείᾳ προ[σ]ήκοντα ἐϊπι]τί ελ]ε[τ]ν, 26. 292% (A.D. 189 90) τὰς ἐπιβαλλο[ύσας ἱερουρ)γίᾳς ἔπιτελεῖν, and from the inscrr. Przene 108?" (after B.C. 129) τάς τε θυσίας ἐπετέλεσεν, αἰ. (cf. Rouffiac Recherches, p. 66). The word is very common = ‘‘accomplish,” ‘‘ complete,” any work or duty. Thus P Tor I. rviii25 (p.c. 117) μηδὲ τὴν αὐτὴν ἐργασίαν ἐπιτελεῖν, P Par 63'° (B.c. 164) (=P Petr III. p. 18) ἕκαστα δ᾽ ἐπιτελεσθῆι κατὰ τὸν ὑποδεδειγμένον ἐν τῶι πεμφθέντι σοι παρ᾽ ἡμῶν ὑπομνήματι > ͵ ἐπιτηδειος τρόπον, “ that everything be performed in the manner laid down in the minute sent to you by us” (Mahaffy), 26. 2655 (B.C. 163-2) ἡμῖν μὲν ὑπέσχετο τὸ προκείμενον ἐπιτελέσειν (for form see Mayser Gr. p. 357), ‘“‘ promised us that he would perform what he had been directed to do.” So in connexion with building P Grenf I. 2117 (B.c. 126) ἕως ἂν ἐπιτελέσωσι---οἵ a dove-cote, P Ryl II. τότ (a Ὁ. 71) ἀν[ο]Ἱικοδομοῦντος Kal ἐπιτελοῦντος [kal ἐπισκ]ευάζοντος-of a priest’s chamber, or with agricultural operations Ζό. 166°° (A D. 26) τὰ δὲ γεωργ[ι]κὰ ἔργα πάντα ἄ[ξ]ω καὶ ἐπιτελέσω καθ᾽ ἕτίος, PSI I. 572° (A.D. 52) προήγμ[ ε]θα ἐγβῆναι τῆς τοῦ κλή(ρου) γεωργ(ίας) τὸ καθῆκον ἐπιτελέσας, and with the execution of a deed in P Oxy III. 4833: (a.p. 108) διὸ ἐπιτελεῖτε ὡς καθήκ(ει.. In BGU IV. 1062! (A.D. 236-7) the verb is used of a payment—avra ἐπιτελέσαι ὅσα τῇ αὐτῇ ὠνῇ ἀνήκει, and in P Giss I. 394 (B.c. 204181) ὃ yéylpaha σοι διὰ" τῆς συγγραφῆς], ὥστε ἐμὲ ἐπιτελέσαι, ἐγὼ ἐπ[ιτελέσω ἄνευ λόγου παντὸς ὁτ]ινοσοῦν τοῦ πρός σε, the editor notes that ὥστε ἐμὲ ἐπιτελέσαι is dependent on the foregoing 8 γέγίραφά σοι. For a weakened sense corresponding to our ‘‘do,” cf. P Oxy VIII. 1118?? (i/ii A.D.) ἐξαλλοτριώσοντα kal ἐπιτελέσοντα ὃ ἐὰν αἱρῶμαι, ‘alienate it (mortgaged property) and do with it whatever I choose” (Ed.), P Ryl 11. 10527 (a.p. 136) ἐπιτέλ(εσον) ὡς καθ(ήκει) ‘‘do what is proper” (Edd.). For the adj. see Michel τοοτῖ 18. (c, B.C. 200) ἐντειλαμένου ἐπιτελῆ pe ποιῆσαι τὰν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Φοίνικος ἐντολάν. In the same inscr. the daughter’s name is seen to be ᾿Εἰπιτέλεια, > , ἐπιτήδειος. For τὰ ἐπιτήδεια, “the necessaries of life,” as in Jas 215, cf. P Hib 1. 110! (c. B.c. 270) where payments are made εἰς τὰ ErirHS[e]ia, and P Lond 1159% (A.D. 145-7) (= III. p- 112) ἐπὶ παροχῆς τῶν ἑτοιμαζομένων ἐπιτηδείων with reference to furnishing provisions and other supplies in view of an impending official visit. See also P Ryl II. 2388 (A.D. 262) παρασχεῖν τὰ ἐπιτήδια πάντα, ‘‘to provide all that is necessary” for certain huntsmen, P Giss I. 8518 ra ἐπιτήδια τῇ σχολῇς (/. σχολῇ), and for the superlative P Oxy IIT. 4728 (c. A.D. 130) ὃ υἱὸς ἐπιτηδειότατος. P Strass I. 321° (A.D. 261) ζυγὸν δὲ ἐνάγων παρά σοι τὸν ἐπιτηδειὄότερον αὐτῷ παράσχες shows the comparative where the context demands a superlative: see Proleg. p. 78. In P Fay 224 (i/a.p.) a husband undertakes to provide for his divorced wife τὰ ἐπειτήδεια, in a manner befitting her rank. The adj. is common along with εὔπορος, e.g. BGU I. 23512 (ii/A.D. 2) εὐπόρους καὶ ἐπιδηδίο[υς] (/. ἐπιτηδείους) γνώμῃ καὶ κινδύ[ν]ων (1.--ὐνῳ), P Oxy IX. 1187" (a.d. 254) ὄ[ν]τα εὔπορον καὶ ἐπιτήδειον, ““ being a person of means and suited for the post ” (Ed.), of a phylarch. For the meaning ‘‘ convenient” cf. P Hib I. 831° (c. The ady. may be illustrated by P Oxy VI. 9385 (ili/iv A.D.) ἠπείχθην καὶ νῦν σοι γράψαι ὅπως αὐτῆς ὥρας γομωσασθῆναι (/. γομωθῆναι) ἐπιτηδείως τὰς σαργάνας ποιήσας ἀποστείλῃς, “1 hasten to write to you now once more and beg you instantly to get the baskets properly laden and send them off” (Edd.), and the subst. ἐπιτήδευμα (common in the LXX) by Vett. Val. p. 73 τοὺς δὲ ἐκ τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων καρποὺς οὐ λαμβάνουσι, > ἐπιτιμία
