Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
ἐπικέλλω (~ ἐποκέλλω ) [page 240]
Blass ( Philology of the Gospels , p. 186) finds in the phrase ἐπέκειλαν τὴν ναῦν of Act_27:41 evidence that Luke was acquainted with Homer (cf. Od. ix. 148, 546) on the grounds that the form ἐπικέλλω is altogether poetical, and that the obsolete ἡ ναῦς is not used anywhere else in the NT. On the other hand, poetical phrases often live on in common speech.
