ἐρείδω

(chiefly in poets and late prose for ἐρυγγάνω), [in LXX for תָּמַךְ (Pr 4:4 5:5 11:16, al.), etc. ;]

to prop, fix firmly: act., as mid., ἐρείσασα, of a ship driving ashore (RV, struck), Ac 27:41.†

ἐρείδω is found in a petition of village-representatives against carrying out certain repairs on an embankment — P Oxy XII. 14698 (A.D. 298) οὐ ταῦτα μὲν οὖν μόνα ἤριστο τῇ κ]ώμῃ ἡμῶν, ‘nor was this all that was imposed upon our village” (Edd.). The compound ἀπερείδω, as in LXX Dan 1°, occurs in P Tor I. 1-19 (B.c. 117-6) of ‘‘ depositing ” dead bodies in a house—GAAa καὶ νεκροὺς ἀπηρεισμένοι τυγχάνουσιν ἐνταῦθα, cf. 16. 11.183. Hunt restores the subst. in P Hawara 17! (i/a.D.) (= Archiv ν. p. 380) ἐνέδωκαν . . . ἐρ]είσμarta, and cites Polyb. ν. 100. 5 τῶν δ᾽ ἐρεισμάτων οὐ Suvapένων ὑποφέρειν τὸ βάρος ἀλλ᾽ ἐνδόντων : cf.
