Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
Ἀκύλας [page 20]
Thayer s doubts regarding the existence of the genitive of this proper name may be set at rest by its occurrence in the papyri, where it is found in two forms Ἀκύλου (BGU II. 484 .6 , A.D. 201 2) and Ἀκύλα ( ib. I. 71 .21 , A.D. 189, P Strass 22 .10 , iii/A.D., Σουβατιανοῦ ᾽Α ). Much earlier is Γαίου Ἰουλίου Ἀκύλα , on the inscr. of Augustus in Preisigke 401, A.D. 10 1. See Deissmann BS , p. 187, where the doubling of the λ in certain manuscripts of Act_18:2 and Rom_16:3 is further illustrated by the occurrence of both Ἀκύλας and Ἀκύλλας in duplicate documents of the end of ii/A.D. with reference to the veteran C. Longinus Aquila (BGU I. 326). An Aquila of Pontus occurs on an inscription of Sinope, Φλ ]αμιν [ί ]ου Ἀκύλα , as noted by D. M. Robinson in the Prosopographia to his monograph on Sinope, Am. Journ. of Philology xxvii. p. 269 (1906).
