Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
εὐνοέω [page 263]
For this verb, which is rare in Bibl. Greek and in the NT is confined to Mat_5:25 , we may cite PSI I. 64 .5 (i/B.C. ?) where a woman comes under a solemn promise εὐνοεῖν , to be well-disposed towards her husband : cf. P Ryl II. 153 .10 (A.D. 138 61) κα [ὶ ] αὐτὸς εὐνοήσας ἐμα [υτῷ κ ]αὶ τῷ πατρί μ̣ο̣υ̣, P Oxy III. 494 .9 (A.D. 156) εὐνοούσῃ μοι καὶ πᾶσαν πίστιν μοι ἐνδεικνυμένῃ , being well-disposed and showing entire faithfulness towards me (Edd.). So from the inscrr. OGIS 532 .9 (B.C. 3) ὀμνύω Δία , Γῆν , Ἥλιον . . . εὐνοή [σειν Καί ]σαρι Σεβαστῶι , similarly Syll 364 .20 (A.D. 37). There seems no good warrant for the transl. agree with in Mt l.c. AV, RV : see Abbott Joh. Voc. p. 207.
