εὐσεβέω [page 265] For the religious connotation of this verb, cf. two of the recently discovered libelli , P Ryl II. 112 ( a ) .4 (A.D. 250) καὶ ἀεὶ μὲν θύουσα καὶ εὐσεβοῦσα τοῖς θεοῖς διετέλεσα , ib. ( c ) .6 ἀεὶ μὲν τοῖς θεοῖς θύω καὶ εὐσεβῶ διατελοῦσα , where the dat. is due to θύειν . For the constr. with the acc., as in Act_17:23 , see a decree by Epaminondas attached to Nero s decree cited s.v. εὐσέβεια , where the Emperor is belauded as προειρημένος εὐεργετεῖν τὴν Ἑλ (λ )άδα , ἀμειβόμενος δὲ καὶ εὐσεβῶν τοὺς θεοὺς ἡμῶν παριστανομένους αὐτῷ πάντοτε ἐπὶ προνοίᾳ καὶ σωτηρίᾳ ( Syll 376 .36 ) : see also s.v. ἀσεβέω . The verb is followed by the more regular πρός in Michel 1558 .22 (iii/B.C.) πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς εὐσεβεῖν .
