to worship, to venerate to express in attitude and ritual one’s allegiance to and regard for deity In a number of languages worship is expressed in an idiomatic manner, for example, ‘to bow down before,’ ‘to lower one’s head before,’ ‘to raise one’s arms to,’ ‘to sing to,’ ‘to honor.’ It is important in selecting an expression for worship to employ a term or phrase which will include various aspects of worship.

εὐσεβέω. For the religious connotation of this verb, cf. two of the recently discovered /be//z, P Ryl II. 112 (a)* (A.D. 250) καὶ ἀεὶ μὲν θύουσα Kal εὐσεβοῦσα τοῖς θεοῖς διετέλεσα, 20. (c)® ἀεὶ μὲν τοῖς θεοῖς θύω καὶ εὐσεβῶ διατελοῦσα, where the dat. is due to θύειν. For the constr. with the acc., as in Ac 173%, see a decree by Epaminondas attached to Nero’s decree cited s.v. εὐσέβεια, where the Emperor is belauded as προειρημένος εὐεργετεῖν τὴν “Εἰλ(λ)άδα, ἀμειβόμενος δὲ kal εὐσεβῶν τοὺς θεοὺς ἡμῶν παριστανομένους αὐτῷ πάντοτε ἐπὶ προνοίᾳ καὶ σωτηρίᾳ (.5γ,}) 37635) : see also s.v. ἀσεβέω. The verb is followed by the more regular πρός in Michel 1558? (iii/8.C.) πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς εὐσεβεῖν.
