θεωρέω. A tendency to use θεωρέω more lightly might be deduced from such passages as P Tebt I. 585 (B.c. 111) οὗτος οὖν θεωρήσας pe ds προσεδρεύοντα καθ᾽ ἡμέραν ὡσεὶ δεδίλανται, “seeing me in daily attendance he has as it were turned coward’ (Edd.), though ‘‘ watched” will translate it here ; 26. 61 (4)°9 (B.C. 118-7) ἠξίουν] . . . συνθεωρεῖσθαι, ““ copguir?,” and again 373 θεωρῆσίθαι (/. τεθεωρῆσ[θαι) ἐκ τῆς] γε[γεν]ημένης εἰκασίας μετὰ ταῦτα, ‘it was perceived from the subsequent estimate.” But whether the verb belonged to the Volkssprache (Blass N.T. Grammatik®, p. 59, s.v. ὁρᾶν) or not, it was hardly a synonym of ὁράω : cf. the use of the two verbs in Jn 16% (Abbott /oz. Voc., p. 104 ff.). (= Selections, p. 126) ἐγῖθεν (λ ἐκεῖθεν) θεωροῦμέν σε τὸν δεσπότην Kal κενὸν (1. καινὸν) (π)ά[τ]ρω[να, ‘‘wherefore we regard you as master and new patron.” Similarly from the inscrr.
