ἱερατεία (-τία) iegatela(—tia) of the actual service of a priest (Lk 19, Heb 75) as distinguished from the more abstract ἱερωσύνη (Ileb 7112"), may be illustrated from Préene 1397 (before B.C. 335) περὶ τῆς δίκης τῆς γενομένης περὶ τῆς ἱερατείης τοῦ Διός. The distinction, however, frequently disappears: cf. e.g. P Tebt II. 29814 (a.p. 107-8) where certain priests pay 52 drachmae ὑπὲρ. . τῆς ἱερατεία[ς, Sy// 6015 (iii/B.Cc.) ὃ] πριάμεϊνο]ς [τὴ]ν ἱερητείαν τῆς ᾿Αρτέμιδος τῆς Περγαίας πα[ρέξ]εται ἱέρειαν ἀστὴν κτλ., and OG/S 90™ (Rosetta stone—B.c. 196) καὶ καταχωρίσαι els πάντας τοὺς χρηματισμοὺς... [τὴν] ἱερατείαν αὐτοῦ, ‘and that his priesthood shall be entered upon all formal documents’’ (Mahaffy). See further s.v. ἱερωσύνη. The adj. ἱερατικός is used of “‘priestly*’ descent in P Tebt 11. 293} (c. A.D. 187) ἐϊπιζητοῦντί σοι εἰ ἔστιν ifepa]τικοῦ [γέϊνους, and in 2d. 29178 (A.D. 162) where a priest claims to be γένους ἱερατικ[ο]ῦ on the ground of his knowledge of hieratic and Egyptian writing ‘1% ἀπΊόδειξιν δοὺς τοῦ ἐπίστασθαι [ἱε]ρατικὰ [καὶ] Αἰγύπτια γράμ[ματ]α ἐξ ἧς οἱ ἱερογραμματεῖς προήνενκαν βίβλου ἱερατικῆς.
