Nδgeli (p. 65 f.) has shown that in the magic papyri ἱλαρός is used practically = the cognate ἵλεως , which appears in Homer as ἵλα [ ϝ ]ος , e.g. P Lond 46 .416 (iv/A.D.) 10 (ii/iii A.D.) ἐλθέ μοι πρόθυμος ἱλαρός , ἀπ́ήμαντος , and, in accordance further with LXX usage, he finds a similar meaning in 2Co_9:7 , where the adj. seems to have the force of gracious, friendly. In P Leid X iii. 12 (iii/iv A.D.) it is used of the bright colour of gold which has been cast into a furnace. A new literary reference is provided by P Oxy XI. 1380 .127 (early ii/A.D.), where a ἱλαρὰ ὄψις is ascribed to Isis. In Preisigke 5510 Ἱλαρά is a proper name.
