cleansing, purification act of cleansing from ritual contamination or impurity The set of terms having the stem καθαρ appears to focus upon the elimination of ritual impurities. From an anthropological standpoint, this means the elimination of ritual contamination, or, in other words, negative taboo. This series of terms with the stem καθαρ appears to contrast with ἁγνίζω[a] and ἁγνισμός[a], ἁγιασμός[b], and ἅγιος[b] (53.44, 53.45, 53.46) focus upon a positive state of consecration and dedication to God and may be regarded as reflecting the acquisition of so-called positive taboo, that is to say, a state of holiness.

καθαρότης. A y/A.b. petition, addressed to an unknown preses, P Oxy VI. 904°, begins—h τῆς ὑμετέρας δικαιοκρισίί]ας καθαρότης κἀμὲ ἐλεήσει τὸν γεγηρακότα, ‘‘the purity of your righteous judgement will surely pity me, an old man” (Edd.). In 7. I. 678 (A.D. 338) the word is used in a complimentary periphrasis—&mep ἀντέγραψεν πρὸς τὴν σὴν ἐπιείκιάν τε καὶ καθαρότητα, “‘ which in reply he wrote to your clemency and impartiality”’ (Edd.). See also A/ichel πίστιν τε kal καθα[ρότητα, and cf. Aristeas 234 where it is shown that God is truly honoured οὐ ϑώροις οὐδὲ θυσίαις, ἀλλὰ ψυχῆς καθαρότητι kal διαλήψεως ὁσίας. For the form καθαρειότης cf. OG/S 339 (c. B.C. 120) διὰ τὴν ἐν τοῖς πιστευνομένοις καθαρειότητα.
