κακολογέω, -@; 1 aor. inf. κακολογῆσαι; (Kaxoddyos) ; i. q. κακῶς λέγω (which the old grammarians prefer, see Lob. ad Phryn. p. 200) ; 1. to speak ill of, revile, abuse, one; to calumniate, traduce: τινά, Mk. ix. 39; τί, Acts xix. 9; (2 Mace. iv. 1; Lys., Plut., al.). 2) Hellenistically, /o imprecate evil on, curse: twa, Mt. xv. 4; Mk. vii. 10, (so for op, Prov. xx. 20; Ezek. xxii. 7; Ex. xxii. 28).

κακολογέω. For this verb, which in the NT seems always to be used in the weaker sense of “speak evil of,” cf. P Fay 1215 (¢ B.C. 103) o[¥] τυχόντως πλεῖστα κακολογηθείς, ‘abused .. . in the most unmeasured terms” (Edd.), P Ryl II. 150° (A.D. 40) ὕβρισεν οὐ μετρίως Kal ἐκακολόγησεν πολλὰ καὶ ἀ[σ]χήμονα, ‘insulted me immoderately with much shame, KQAKOTIOLE®@ ful abuse” (Edd.). The subst. occurs in P Tebt I. 2477 (B.C. 117) τῆς προσεσχηκνίας adt[ot]s κακολογίας.
