straw, thatch the dry stalks of grain or reeds κάλαμος It is difficult in 1CO 3:12 to know precisely the distinction between χόρτον ‘grass’ and καλάμην ‘straw.’ It would seem clear that καλάμην would be less valuable than χόρτον, and this might be a reference to the use of straw as a very poor thatching material. On the other hand, it could be understood as a reference to the use of straw in place of grass in the making of sun- dried bricks.

καλάμη (kalamē) — straw/stubble. κᾰλᾰμ-η, ἡ, (see. κάλαμος) stalk, especially the stalk or straw of corn, metaphorically in [Refs 8th c.BC+], i.e. when there is much straw and little harvest, much slaughter and little profit, [Refs 8th c.BC+]; κ. πυρῶν wheat-straw, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; proverbial of a greedy farmer, πυροὺς ἐπὶ καλάμῃ ἀροῦν to exhaust ground by one corn-crop after another, [Refs 5th c.BC+]
