Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
καταβραβεύω. This rare verb (Col 218) is found in a Ptolemaic dispute regarding succession, Pretsigke 4512: (B.c. 167-134) ὅθεν καταβεβραβευμένοι [... 2... - + +e Τήρου συνερι[ο]ν ἀξιοῦμεν, ἐὰν φαίν[η]ται, συντάξαι κτλ. See also s.v. βραβεύω, and cf. Vett. Val. p. 344° δοκεῖ δὲ καθὼς ὁρῶμεν ἡ γῆ καταβραβεύειν τῶν λοιπῶν ἐπέχουσα αὐτὴ τὰ πάντα ὡς πρόγονος. A certain sense of ‘‘ assumption” and ὁ“ officialism” connected with the word may have led Paul to prefer it to κατακρίνω in Col /.c.: see Fiell Noses, p. 196.
