Just. 4, 47) the tax or tribute levied on individuals and to be paid yearly (Hesychius κῆνσος. εἶδος νομισματος, ἐπικεφάλαιον, our capitation or poll tax): Mat_17:25; Mat_22:17; Mar_12:14; τό νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου, the coin with which the tax is paid, tribute money, Mat_22:19.

An early example of this Latinism = capitation-tax ( Mar_12:14 al. ) occurs in what is probably a i/B.C. inscr. from. Bizye β ]ασιλέα Κό [τυ ](ν ) βασλέως Ῥησκουπορέως υἱ [ὸν ] Ῥωμαῖοι οἱ πρώ (τ )ως κατακληθέντες εἰς κῆνσον ἑατῶν θεόν ( Annual of Brit. School of Athens xii. p. 178).
