Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT
κῆπος [page 343]
This homely word, substituted by Lk (13:19) for ἀγρός in Mt (13:31) and γῆ in Mk (4:31), is well attested in the ver nacular, e.g. P Petr III. 26 .7 (Ptol.) ἢ παράδεισον ἢ κῆπον , where Grenfell ( Rev. Laws , p. 95) thinks that the παράδεισος may have contained palms and fruit trees and the κῆπος vegetables and flowers, and ib. 39 iii. 1 f. (Ptol.), an account for a χῶμα between the κῆποι of two men. See also PSI V. 488 .12 (B.C. 258 7) πρὸς λίβα τοῦ βασιλικοῦ κήπου (in Memphis), BGU IV. 1141 .26 (B.C. 14) οἵαν γὰρ ὕβριν μοι πεπόηκεν ἐν τῷ κήπῳ , P Flor I. 16 .8 (A.D. 239) βούλομαι μισθώσασθαι κήπου λαχανευομένου (ἄρουραν ) ᾱ , and from the inscrr. Syll 590 .5 (iii/B.C.) ἀνέθηκε ] καὶ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ τὸν κῆπον . The dim. κήπιον may be illustrated from a receipt for a rope εἰς τὴν μηχ (ανὴν ) τοῦ κηπίου τῆς ἁγί (ας ) Μαρίας ἐπὶ τῷ ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ εἰς τὴν ἁγί (αν ) κολυμβήθραν , for the machine in the garden of the Holy Mary for raising water to fill the holy font (P Oxy I. 147 A.D. 556). Κηποτάφιον = a tomb in the garden (cf. Joh_19:41 ) occurs in BGU IV. 1120 .7 (B.C. 5).
