κράσπεδον, κρασπέδου, τό, in classical Greek the extremity or prominent part. of a thing, edge, skirt, margin; the fringe of a garment; in the N. T. for Hebrew φΔιφΔιϊ, i. e. a little appendage hanging down from the edge of the mantle or cloak, made of twisted wool; a tassel, tuft: Mat_9:20; Mat_14:36; Mat_23:5; Mar_6:56; Luk_8:44. The Jews had such appendages attached to their mantles to remind them of the law, according to Num_15:37 f. Cf. Winers RWB under the word Saum; (B. D. under the phrase, ; Edersheim, Jesus the Messiah, 1:624; especially Ginsburg in Alex.'s Kitto under the word Fringes).

κράσπεδον , the fringe or tassel, which the Law required every Jew to attach to the corners of his outer garment ( Num_15:35 f. , Deu_22:12 ). The word is found in the magic P Lond 121 .371 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 96) ἐξάψας κράσπετον ( l. δον ) τοῦ ἱματίου σου .
