λανθάνω [page 370] The construction in Act_26:26 may be illustrated by P Oxy I. 34 verso iii. 3 (A.D. 127) οὐκ ἔλαθἑ με , it did not escape my notice, ib. III. 530 .5 (ii/A.D.) ἐμὲ δὲ ἐλελήθει διαστελ̣λ [ει ]ν τι , but I had forgotten to make any order for payment (Edd.), ib. X. 1253 .22 (iv/A.D.) ἵνα μηδέν σου λανθάνῃ τὴν λαμπρότητα μηνύομεν , we give this information in order that nothing may escape your highness (Edd.). The verb is used with out an obj. in P Strass I. 73 .5 (iii/A.D.) ὲ̣λαθέν̣ γε κεράμια ὀψαρίων εἰς διάπρασιν , the jars for dainties are lacking for sale. With the usage in Heb_13:2 cf. P Gen I. 17 .16 (iii/A.D.) ὑφωροῦμε (= ὑφορῶμαι ) . . . . . μὴ ἄρ [α ἐ ]νθρώσκων [ . . . ἔλ ]αθεν ὓ̣[δατ ]ι , I suspect he may have jumped into the water unnoticed : see also P Hamb I. 27 .9 (B.C. 250) οὐκ ἔτι οὖν παρέλαβέμ με , ἀλλ᾽ ἔλαθέμ με κομισάμενος . λανθάνω [Etym: from Root ΛΑΘ] in most of the act. tenses, "to escape notice, to be unknown, unseen, unnoticed": c. acc. pers., λ. τινά only, "to escape" his notice, Lat. latere aliquem, Hom. , attic; impers., σὲ λέληθε it "has escaped" your notice, Plat. most often with a part. added, in which case we usually translate the part. by a Verb, and express λανθάνω by an Adverb, "unawares, without being observed, unseen, unknown"; and this, either, with an acc. pers., ἄλλον τινὰ λήθω μαρνάμενος "I am unseen by" others while fighting, i. e. I fight "unseen by" them, Il. ; μὴ λάθηι με προσπεσών lest he come on "unseen" by me, Soph. without an acc., μὴ διαφθαρεὶς λάθηι lest he perish "without himself knowing it", id=Soph. ; δουλεύων λέληθας you are a slave "without knowing it", Ar. —This construct. is reversed, as in our idiom, ἀπὸ τείχεος ἆλτο λαθών (for ἔλαθεν ἁλόμενος) Il. ; λήθουσά μ᾽ ἐξέπινες Soph. the compd. Verbs ἐκληθάνω, ἐπιλήθω (v. sub vocc.), take a Causal sense, "to make one forget" a thing, c. gen. rei: so in redupl. aor2 λέλαθον, ὄφρα λελάθηι ὀδυνάων that "he may cause" him "to forget" his pains, Il. Mid. and Pass. "to let" a thing "escape one, to forget": "to forget", absol. or c. gen. rei, Hom. ; so in redupl. aor., οὐδέ σέθεν θεοὶ λελάθοντο Il. , etc.; and in perf. pass., ἐμεῖο λελασμένος id=Il. ; κείνου λελῆσθαι Soph. "to forget purposely, to pass over", ἢ λάθετ᾽ ἢ οὐκ ἐνόησεν either "he chose to forget it" or perceived it not, Il.
