wine press an instrument for pressing out the juice of grapes for the making of wine Ancient wine presses consisted of large vats into which grapes were placed and then trampled on in order to extract the juice. Accordingly, a descriptive equivalent of wine press may be ‘a place where the juice of grapes was squeezed out’ or ‘... pressed out.’

P Amh II. 487(B.c. 106) παρὰ ληνόν, ‘at the wine-press,” P Oxy IV. 7291 (a.p. 137) ἀπ]οδότωσαν τῷ μεμισθ[ω]κότι τὸν μὲν οἶνον παρὰ ληνὸν νέον ἄδολον, ‘they shall pay to the lessor the wine at the vat, new and unadulterated ” (Edd.), 2. ILL. 502% (a.p. 164) τὰς οὔσας Awods λιθίνας δύο ὑδριῶν Kal SApov, ‘the two existing stone presses with the water-pitchers and trough ’’ (Edd.).
