Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

λογ ( ε ) ία [page 377] Deissmann s confirmation of the meaning collection for this word in 1Co_16:1 f. has been plentifully supported since the publication of BS (pp. 142 ff., 219f.). See e.g. from Ptolemaic times P Hib 1. 51 .2 (B.C. 245) ἐπιστολῆς περὶ τῆς λογείας τῶν χλωρῶν τἀντίγραφ [ον , the copy of the letter about the collection of (the value of) the green stuffs, P Grenf II. 38 .15 (mid. i/B.C.) γράφωμαί σ̣ε ( l. γραφήσομαί σοι ) περὶ τῆς λογέας , and P Tebt I. 58 .55 (B.C. 111) προσπαρακα̣λέσαι Νίκωνα περὶ τῆς λογέας , urge on Nicon concerning the collection. An excellent illustration, almost contemporary with 1 Cor, is afforded by P Oxy II. 239 .8 (A.D. 66) ὀμνύω . . . μηδεμίαν λογείαν γεγονέναι ὑπ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ κώμ̣ῃ , I swear that I have levied no contributions whatever in the above village, where the editors note that λογεία is used for irregular local contributions as opposed to regular taxes, and compare BGU II. 515 .7 (A.D. 193) (= Chrest. I. 268) where τὰ ὑπὲρ λογίας [ἐ ]πιβληθέντα are contrasted with σιτικὰ δημόσια . In this last case the reference may be to a collection for religious purposes, as frequently in the ostraca in connexion with a tax for the priests of Isis, cf. the Theban ostracon of date 4 Aug. A.D. 63, reproduced by Deissmann ( LAE p. 104 f.), which, after an opening greeting, runs as follows ἀπέχω παρὰ σοῦ (δραχμὰς ) δ̄ ὀβο (λὸν ) τὴν λογίαν Ἴσιδος περὶ τῶν δημοσίων , I have received from thee 4 drachmae 1 obol, being the collection of Isis on behalf of the public works : see further Wilcken Ostr. i. p. 253 ff., Otto Priester i. p. 359 ff., and from the inscrr. the i/A.D. marble tablet from Smyrna, Syll 583 .26 κλεῖν κεχρυσωμένην καὶ ἐμπεφιασμένην πρὸς τὴν λογήαν καὶ πομπὴν τῶν θεῶν , where as Deissmann points out ( LAE p. 105 n. .10 ), the reference seems to be to a procession on the occasion of which money contributions were expected from the spectators. Other exx. of the word with varying references are P Lond 3 .7 (B.C. 146 or 135) (= I. p.46) τῆς τιμ [ῆς το ]ῦ ἡμίσους τοῦ [τρί ]του λογείας τῶν κειμένων νεκρῶν , P Giss I. 617 (A.D. 119) μηνύοντ [ες ] α̣[ὐ ]τὸν λογίαν πε̣[π ]οιηκέναι ἐπὶ τῆς κώμης Ναβόωι , BGU III. 891 verso .12 (A.D. 144) τοὺς δ̄ πρεσβυτ (έρους ) [τ ]ῆς αὐτῆς κώ (μης ) ἐνκαλου (μένους ) ὑπὸ Χαιρή [μ ]ονο [ς ] . . περὶ ἧς φησιν πεπο [ι ]ῆσθαι λογ̣ι̣ας , and P Lond 342 .15 (A.D. 185) (= II. p. 174) where complaint is made against a village πρεσβύτερος παρ᾽ ἕκαστα λογείας ποιεῖται . In view ofthe above, it is clear that the statement in Grimm-Thayer Not found in prof. auth. requires modification, and it is instructive to notice that words like this and the adj. δοκίμιος , genuine, have disappeared so completely from our literary sources, when the vernacular used them with such freedom. Λογεία should probably be read in 2Ma_12:43 ποιησάμενός τε κατ᾽ ἄνδρα λογείαν . On the forms of λογεία see Moulton Gr. ii. p. 82.
