noun, f. | -ίδος | μερίζω
63.13 · Whole, Unite, Part, Divide · Part
share, portion part or portion, with the possible implication of a division or significant distinction
1.85 · Geographical Objects and Features · Governmental Administrative Areas
district an administrative district In ACT 16:12 (the only occurrence of μερίς[b] in the NT) the Greek New Testament published by the United Bible Societies has adopted a conjectural emendation, since the more traditional text, πρώτη τῆς μερίδος, literally ‘first of the district,’ is not only misleading in meaning but does not reflect the historical fact that Philippi was a city in one of the four districts of Macedonia but was not a capital city.

μερίς. The use of this word in Ac 1613 πρώτη τῆς μερίδος ΜακεSovias πόλις, which Hort objected to on the ground that ““wep(s never denotes simply a region, province, or any geographical division” (Motes*, p. 96), is now amply justified on the evidence of the papyri, as well as of later Greek writers | used as a title of Sarapis: Dieterich compares Lk 1214, generally (see W. M. Ramsay £x# V. vi. p. 320). An almost contemporary ex. is P Tebt II. 3024 (a.p. 71-2) τῆς Π[ολ]έμωνος μερίδος, “the division of Polemon” in the Arsinoite nome: cf. 26. 31518 (ii/A.p.) where a priest connected with temple finance is warned that a government inspector was on the point of coming ‘‘to his division ’— pleJAA[t]v Kal els τὴν με[ρί]δα σου ἔρχ[ςε]σθαι. | “‘take care to secure the share of Philopator.’’
