ἀναθεματίζω; 1 aorist ἀνεθεμάτισα; (ἀνάθεμα, which see); a purely Biblical and ecclesiastical word, to declare anathema or accursed; in the Sept. equivalent to δΖηΑψΔιν to devote to destruction (Jos_6:21, etc.; 1Ma_5:5); ἑαυτόν to declare oneself liable to the severest divine penalties, Act_23:12; Act_23:21; ἀναθέματι ἀναθεματίζειν (Deu_13:15; Deu_20:17 (Winers Grammar, § 54, 3; Buttmann, 184 (109))) ἑαυτόν, followed by an infinitive, to bind oneself under a curse to do something, Act_23:14. absolutely, to asseverate with direful imprecations: Mar_14:71. ἀναθεματίζω [page 33] For the meaning see under ἀνάθεμα . The form may be illustrated by ἐκθεματίζω in P Tebt I. 27 .108 (B.C. 113) ἐκθεματισθῆι , be proclaimed a defaulter. There is also a simplex in BGU IV. 1127 .30 (B.C. 18) ἐξῖναι τῷ Εὐαγγέλωι θεματίσαντι ἐπὶ τράπεζαν ἔνθεσμον . . . παραχώρησιν ποιεῖσθαι , Syll 329 .56 (i/B.C.), meaning to deposit.
