to curse to invoke divine harm if what is said is not true or if one does not carry out what has been promised In MRK 14:71 ἀναθεματίζω is in many regards similar in meaning to ὄμνυμι (33.463), but ἀναθεματίζω specifically denotes a curse which was invoked by Peter if what he was saying was not true.
1 It is possible that καταθεματίζω is somewhat stronger in meaning than ἀναθεματίζω, but this cannot be shown from existing contexts.

ἀναθεματίζω. For the meaning see under ἀνάθεμα. The form may be illustrated by ἐκθεματίζω in P Tebt I. 27:08. (8.6. 113) ἐκθεματισθῆι, “be proclaimed a defaulter.” There is also a simplex in BGU IV. 1127* (u.c. 18) ἐξῖναι τῷ Εἰὐαγγέλωι θεματίσαντι ἐπὶ τράπεζαν ἔνθεσμον. . . παραχώρησιν ποιεῖσθαι, Sy// 329% (i/B.c.), meaning ‘to deposit.
