μετά (on its neglect of elision before proper names beginning with a vowel, and before sundry other words (at least in Tdf.s text) see Tdf. Proleg., p. 95; cf. WH. Introduction, p. 146b; Winers Grammar, § 5, 1 a.; Buttmann, p. 10), a preposition, akin to μέσος (as German mit to Mitte, mitten) and hence, properly, in the midst of, amid, denoting association, union, accompaniment; (but some recent etymologists doubt its kinship to μέσος; some connect it rather with ἅμα, German sammt, cf. Curtius, § 212; Vanicek, p. 972). It takes the genitive and accusative (in the Greek poets also the dative). A.D. 25) παρακαλῶ σε μετὰ πάση̣ς δυνάμεως ἔχειν αὐτὸν συνεσταμένον (cf. Luk_14:18 f. ), and OGIS 56 .10 (B.C. 237) τὴν ἐπιμέλειαν διὰ παντὸς ποιοῦνται μετὰ μεγάλης δαπάνης καὶ χορηγίας . (d) With this may be compared the gen. of equipment (as in Mat_26:47 al. ) in the instructions to wear a befitting costume for an official function, P Oxy I. 123 .15 (iii/iv A.D.) εἰσβαίνων οὖν μετὰ τῆς αἰσθῆτος ( l. ἐσθῆτος ) γνώτω ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἵνα ἕτοιμος εἰσβῇ , let him remember when he enters that he must wear the proper dress, that he may enter prepared (Edd.), .19 ἐκ̣[ε ]λεύσθημεν γὰρ μετὰ τῶν χλαμύδων εἰσβῆναι , for the orders which we received were to wear cloaks when we entered (Edd.). (e) This prepares us for a corresponding usage in connexion with mental states or feelings, e.g. P Amh II. 133 .11 (early ii/A.D.) μετὰ πολλῶν κόπων ἀνηκάσαμεν αὐτῶν ἀντάσχεσθαι ( l. ἠναγκάσαμεν αὐτοὺς ἀντίσχεσθαι᾽ τῆς τούτων ἐν̣ε̣ργίας ἐπὶ τῷ προτέρῳ ἐκφορίου ( l. ίῳ ), with great difficulty I made them set to work at the former rent (Edd.), P Lond 358 .8 ( c. A.D. 150) ( = II. p. 172) ἐπανανκάσαι με μετὰ ὕβρεων καὶ πληγῶν . Allied to this is the meaning according to, as in P Tebt I. 27 .32 (B.C. 113) μετὰ τῆς ἑαυτοῦ γνώμης . (f) The instrumental usage by means of is specially noticeable in the magic papyri, e.g. P Lond 121 .226 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 91) γράφε μ [ετ ]ὰ μέλανος γραφικοῦ , ib. 46 .65 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p 67) ἔνχριε δὲ τὸν δεξιὸν ὀφθαλμὸν μεθ᾽ ὕδατος . Cf. also BGU III. 909 .8 (A.D. 359) ἐβουλήθη ἐπέλευσίν μοι ποιήσασθαι μετὰ ξίφους , although this may be classed with (d) supra. In Acta S. Marinae , p. 30 .18 ἔτυπτεν τὴν κεφαλὴν μετὰ τῆς σφύρας may be contrasted with the classical dative ib. p. 31 τύπτουσα τῇ σφύρᾳ . This leads to the common MGr use of μέ , with the acc. to denote the instrument (cf. Evans CQ xv. p. 28). (g) In Luk_1:58 (cf. Act_14:27 ; Act_15:4 ) it is customary to see a usage influenced by literal translation from the Semitic (see Proleg. p. 106, but cf. p. 246), but the usage is not unknown to vernacular Greek, e.g. P Amh II. 135 .15 (early ii/A.D.) τί δὲ ἡμεῖν συνέβη μετὰ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἴσως ἐγνώκατε ἢ κνώσσεσθε ( l. γνώσεσθε ), what befell us in connexion with the magistrates you have probably heard or will hear (Edd.), and the Byzantine BGU III. 798 .8 εἰχαριστοῦμεν̣. . . τῇ ἡμῶν δεσποίνῃ εἰς πάντα τὰ καλὰ ἃ ἐποίησεν̣ μετὰ τῶν δούλων αὐτῆς . Thumb Hellen. p. 125 shows that MGr disproves Semitism in πολεμεῖν μετά τινος (cf. Rev_12:7 al. ), comparing a MGr folksong τρεῖς ὥρες ἐπολέμαε μὲ (= μετὰ ) δεκόχτω χιλιάδες . We may also cite the Nubian inscr. of Silco I. OGIS 201 .3 ἐπολέμησα μετὰ τῶν Βλεμύων , .19 οἳ φιλονεικοῦσιν μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ . (h) Under the gen. construction we need only add μεθ᾽ ὧν , wherewith, an epistolary formula introducing the closing greeting, e.g. BGU IV. 1080 .23 (iii/A.D.) (as amended Chrest I. p. 564 ) προσα [γ ]όρευε ἀπ᾽ ἐμοῦ πολλὰ τήν σοι φιλτάτην σύνευνον , μεθ᾽ ὧν ἐρρῶσθαί σε καὶ εὐανθοῦντα εὔχομαι , κύριέ μου υἱέ the words from ἐρρῶσθαί to the end are added in a different hand, and similarly P Lips I. 110 .27 (iii/iv A.D.). (2) c. acc (a) with persons, meaning besides, in addition to : P Lond 260 .87 (a list relating to the poll-tax A.D. 72 3) (= II. p. 50) μετ [ὰ τοὺ ]ς τετ̣[ε̣]λ (ευτηκότας ), including those who have since died (Ed.), P Flor III. 338 (iii/A.D.) ἂλλον γὰρ σπουδαῖον οὐκ ἔχω (= ο )μεν μετὰ τοῦτον . Cf. P Giss I. 50 .13 (A.D. 259) μετὰ τὰ κριθ̣έντα , besides what has been determined. (b) after, of time : P Petr III. 104 .4 (B.C. 244 3) μετὰ τὸν σπόρον τοῦ δ̄ (ἔτους ), after the sowing of the 4th year, P Tebt I. 72 .467 (B.C. 114 3) μετὰ τὸν διαλογισμόν , after the inquiry, P Oxy II. 278 .16 (hire of a mill A.D. 17) μετὰ τὸν χρόνον ἀπ [οκα ]ταστησάτωι ὁ μα̣νης τὸν μύλον ὑγιῆι καὶ ἀσινῆι , at the end of the time the servant shall restore the mill safe and uninjured (Edd.), ib. 76 .25 (A.D. 179) πρὸς τὸ μετὰ τελευτὴν αὐτοῦ ἀνεύθυνόν με εἶναι , in order to free me from responsibility after his death (Edd.), ib. VI. 903 .36 (iv/A.D.) ἔμεινεν λέγων ὅτι μετὰ μῆναν λαμβάνω πολιτικὴν ἐμαυτῷ , he kept saying A month hence I will take a mistress (Edd.) : cf. Act_1:5 and see further Schulze Gr. Lat. p. 17. Similarly ib. XIV. 1637 .28 (A.D. 257 9) μετ᾽ ἄλλα , etc., P Tebt II. 286 .3 (report of a trial A.D. 121 138) μεθ᾽ ἕτερα , after other evidence, and P Ryl II. 77 .41 (A.D. 192) μετ᾽ ὀλίγον . A curious usage, as yet unexplained, is found in a few tax-receipts, where μετὰ λόγον is inserted between the name of the month and the day, e.g. P Fay 53 .2 (A.D. 110 1) Φαῶφι μετὰ [λόγο ]ν κ̄ς̄ : see the editors note. (c) For μετὰ τό c. inf. cf. P Par 63 .193 (B.C. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 36) μετὰ τὸ γράψαι τὴν πρὸ ταύτης ἐπιστολήν , after writing the former letter. For further exx. of the different uses of μετά the monographs of Kuhring and Rossberg (see Abbreviations I.) should be consulted. The form μετά still occurs in MGr dialects (e.g. in Pontus); also with 1st and 2nd personal pronouns (e.g. μετὰ σένα , μετὰ ἐσένα ), and in a few stereotyped formulae (e.g. μετὰ βιᾶς , with effort ). The common form, however, is μέ (Thumb, Handbook , p. 103 f.).

μετά "in the midst of, among with gen., dat., and acc." Prep. with gen., dat., and acc. WITH GEN. "in the midst of, among" a number, μετ᾽ ἄλλων ἑταίρων Od. ; πολλῶν μετὰ δούλων Aesch. "in common, along with", μετὰ Βοιωτῶν ἐμάχοντο Il. ; μ. ξυμμάχων κινδυνεύειν Thuc. ; μετά τινος πάσχειν, στῆναι Aesch. , Soph. "with, by means of", ἱκετεύειν μετὰ δακρύων Plat. ; μετ᾽ ἀρετῆς πρωτεύειν Xen. :—as a periphr. for Adverbs, ὁσίως καὶ μετ᾽ ἀληθείας Plat. WITH DAT., only poet., mostly epic, properly of persons, "among, in company with", μετὰ τριτάτοισιν ἄνασσεν "in or among" the third generation Nestor reigned, Il. of things, μετὰ νηυσί, ἀστράσι "among, in the midst of", Hom. ; μετὰ πνοιῇς ἀνέμοιο "in company with" the winds, "as swift as" they, id=Hom. "between", μετὰ χερσὶν ἔχειν to hold "between", i. e. "in", the hands, Il. ; μετὰ φρεσίν id=Il. to complete a number, "with, besides", πέμπτος μετὰ τοῖσιν "a fifth" with them, Hom. ;—N. B., μετά is never used with dat. sg., unless of collective Nouns, μετὰ στρατῷ Il. WITH ACCUS., of motion, "into the middle of coming among" a number, μετὰ φῦλα θεῶν Hom. ; μετὰ λαὸν Ἀχαιῶν Il. "in pursuit or quest of", βῆναι μετὰ Νέστορα id=Il. ; in hostile sense. βῆναι μετά τινα to go "after", pursue him, id=Il. ;—also, βῆναι μετὰ πατρὸς ἀκουήν to go "in search of" news of thy father, Od. ; πόλεμον μέτα θωρήσσοντο they were arming "for" the battle, Il. of mere sequence or succession, of Place, "after, next after, behind", λαοὶ ἕπονθ᾽ ὡσεὶ μετὰ κτίλον ἕσπετο μῆλα as sheep follow "after" the bell-wether, Il. of Time, "after, next to", μεθ᾽ Ἕκτορα πότμος ἑτοῖμος "after" Hector thy death is at the door, id=Il. ; μετὰ ταῦτα "thereupon, thereafter", attic; μεθ᾽ ἡμέραν "in the course of" the day, Hdt. of Worth, Rank, "next to, next after", following a Sup., κάλλιστος ἀνὴρ μετ᾽ ἀμύμονα Πηλείωνα Il. μετά (before vowel μετ᾽; on the neglect of elision in certain cases, V. WH, App., 146 b), prep. with genitive, accusative (in poet, also with dative), [in LXX for אַחַד ,עִם ,אֵת, etc.]. __I.
