until, to, at last, at length the continuous extent of time up to a point The phrase εἰ μὴ ὅταν is often translated as ‘until’ (for example, μηδενὶ ἅ εἶδον διηγήσωνταιεἰ μὴ ὅταν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῇ ‘not to tell anybody what they have seen until the Son of Man has risen from death’ MRK 9:9), but this phrase may be analyzed as meaning ‘if it is not when,’ an expression which is semantically equivalent to ‘until.’

1 ἕως, ἄχρι, and μέχρι frequently occur with a postposed marker of indefinite temporal reference: οὗ, occurring with all three markers, and ὅτου with ἕως. 2 It is probable that ἕως[c], ἄχρι[c], and μέχρι[b] differ slightly in meaning, but this cannot be readily determined from existing contexts.
