womb the uterus For the total expression as an idiom, see 10.45. Rarely can one translate literally LUK 2:23 as ‘every male that opens the womb,’ since this is likely to refer to an adult male who first has sexual intercourse with a woman. The reference in LUK 2:23 is, of course, to the first male child which is born to a woman, and therefore an appropriate equivalent in many languages is ‘a woman’s first baby if it is a boy.’

μήτρα, ““womb”’ (Lk 238, Rom 419), may be illustrated by a magic spell of possibly ii/A.D., found among the Hawara papyri, Archiv v. p. 393, No. 312% ἄγε αὐτὴν τὴν Σαραπιάδ[α] ἣν ἔτεκεν εἰδία μήτρα μαει ore ελβωσατοκ κτλ. Wiinsch commenting on this (p. 397) refers to a tablet from Hadrumetum (Amdol/lent 264!2*-) with the words Victoria quem peperit Suavulva: ‘‘das letzte ist kaum ein eigentlicher Name, sondern ein Ersatz fir den unbekannten Namen der Mutter” (Berl. phzl.
