T. used only in symbolic and figurative discourse: οὐκ ἐμόλυναν τά ἱμάτια αὐτῶν, of those who have kept themselves pure from the defilement of sin, Rev_3:4 (cf. Zec_3:3 f); μετά γυναικῶν οὐκ ἐμολύνθησαν, who have not soiled themselves by fornication and adultery, Rev_14:4; ἡ συνείδησις μολύνεται, of a conscience reproached (defiled) by sin, 1Co_8:7 (inexplebili quodam laedendi proposito conscientiam polluebat, Ammianus Marcellinus 15, 2; opposed to καθαρά συνείδησις, 1Ti_3:9; 2Ti_1:3; μολύνειν τήν ψυχήν, Sir_21:28; but see μιαίνω, 2). μολύνω [page 416] The metaphorical use of this word in the NT ( 1Co_8:7 , Rev_3:4 ; Rev_14:4 ) is well illustrated by the uncanonical fragment P Oxy V. 840 .16 ἀλλὰ μεμολυ [μμένος ] ἐπάτησας τοῦτο τὸ ἱερὸν τ [όπον ὄν ]τα καθαρόν , but polluted as thou art thou hast walked in this temple, which is a pure place. Cf. also Epict. ii. 8. 13 ἐν σαυτῷ φέρεις αὐτὸν ( scil. θεὸν ) καὶ μολύνων οὐκ αἰσθάνῃ ἀκαθάρτοις μὲν διανοήμασι ῥυπαραῖς δὲ πράξεσι .
