Joh_20:25; Joh_20:27. On the further use of the word cf. Fritzsche, Romans, ii., p. 559. (Compare: κατανύσσω.)

Abbott-Smith Greek Lexicon

** νύσσω ( Att. . -ττω ), [in LXX : Sir_22:19 , 3Ma_5:14 * ;] to pierce: τ . πλευρὰν λόγχῃ , Joh_19:34 , [ Mat_27:40 ], WH .†

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

νύσσω [page 432] For the ἔτυπτον . . καλάμῳ of Mar_15:19 , Ev. Petr. 3 substitutes καλάμῳ ἔνυσσον . This may perhaps be taken as supporting the milder sense of pricked instead of pierced (AV, RV) which Field ( Notes , p. 108) prefers in Joh_19:34 πλευρὰν ἔνυξεν , in distinction from ἐξεκέντησαν in ver. 37. Swete ad Ev. Petr. l.c. cites also Orac. Sib. viii 296 πλευρὰς νύξουσιν καλάμῳ .

Liddell-Scott — Intermediate Greek Lexicon

νύσσω νύσσω, "to touch with a sharp point, to prick, spur, pierce", Il. , Hes. ; ἀγκῶνι νύξας "having nudged" him with the elbow, Od. ; ν. γνώμην "to prick" it (and see what is in it), Ar.

STEPBible — Tyndale Abridged Greek Lexicon
