οἰκοδομία, ὀικοδομιας, ἡ (οἰκοδομέω) (the act of) buliding, erection (Thucydides, Plato, Polybius, Plutarch, Lucian, etc.; but never in the Sept.); metaphorically, οἰκοδομίαν Θεοῦ τήν ἐν πίστει, the increase which God desires in faith (see οἰκοδομή), 1Ti_1:4 Rec.bez elz; but see οἰκονομία. Not infrequent οἰκονομία and οἰκοδομία are confounded in the manuscripts; see Grimm on 4 Maccabees, p. 365, cf. Hilgenfeld, the Epistle of Barnabas, p. 28; (D'Orville, Chariton 8, 1, p. 599).

For οἰκοδομία in its literal sense of building, cf. OGIS 843 .104 (ii/B.C.) τὸ ἴσον εἰσφ [ερ ]έτωσαν εἰς τὴν οἰκοδομίαν , and Cagnat IV. 661 .11 (Acmonia A.D. 85) ὅπως μηδὲν τοῦ μνημείου τούτου ἢ τῶν περὶ [αὐ ]τὸ φυτειῶν ἢ οἰκοδομιῶν ἐλασσωθῇ κτλ . The adj. occurs in Syll 932 (= .3 880) .65 (A.D. 202) ἐν τοῖς οἰκοδομικοῖς καὶ ἐν τοῖς λειτουργικοῖς καὶ ἐν τοῖς χρηστικοῖς (see the editor s note). In the NT the subst. is read only in 1Ti_1:4 D c (οἰκονομίαν ΰ AG al. ), where it is used metaphorically.
