By a usage chiefly Hebraistic the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is roused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i. e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds, etc.; thus, εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου, out of regard for (see εἰς, B. II. 2 d.) the name of prophet which he bears, equivalent to because he is a prophet, Mat_10:41; βαπτίζειν τινα εἰς ὄνομα τίνος, by baptism to bind anyone to recognize and publicly acknowledge the dignity and authority of one (cf. βαπτίζω, II.
b. (aa.)), Mat_28:19; Act_8:16; Act_19:5; 1Co_1:13; 1Co_1:15. to do a thing ἐν ὀνόματι τίνος, i. e. by one's command and authority, acting on his behalf, promoting his cause (cf. After the analogy of the preceding expression, the name of Christ (Ἰησοῦ, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν, etc.) is used in the N. T. of all those things which, in hearing or recalling that name, we are bidden to recognize in Jesus and to profess; accordingly, of "his Messianic dignity, divine authority, memorable sufferings, in a word the peculiar services and blessings conferred by him on men," so far forth as these are believed, confessed, commemorated (cf. The phrase ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ is used in various senses:
a. by the command and authority of Christ: see examples just above.
b. in the use of the name of Christ i. e. the power of his name being invoked for assistance, Mar_9:38 Relz L T Tr WH (see f. below); Luk_10:17; Act_3:6; Act_4:10; Act_16:18; Jas_5:14; universally, ἐν ποιῶ ὀνόματι ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο; Act_4:7.
c. through the power of Christ's name, pervading and governing their souls, Mar_16:17.
d. in acknowledging, embracing, professing, the name of Christ: σωθῆναι, Act_4:12; δικαιωθῆναι, 1Co_6:11; ζωήν ἔχειν, Joh_20:31; in professing and proclaiming the name of Christ, παρρησιάζεσθαι, Act_9:27-28 (29).
e. relying or resting on the name of Christ, rooted (so to speak) in his name, i. e. mindful of Christ: ποιεῖν τί, Col_3:17; εὐχαριστεῖν, Eph_5:20; αἰτεῖν τί, i. e. (for substance) "to ask a thing, as prompted by the mind of Christ and in reliance on the bond which unites us to him," Joh_14:13; Joh_15:16; Joh_16:24,(26), and R G L in 23; cf. God is said to do a thing ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ, regardful of the name of Christ, i. e. moved by the name of Christ, for Christ's sake, διδόναι the thing asked, Joh_16:23 T Tr WH; πέμπειν τό πνεῦμα τό ἅγιον Joh_14:26 f. ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ (A. V. for the name of Christ) (German auf Grund Namens Christi), i. e. because one calls himself or is called by the name of Christ: ὀνειδίζεσθαι, 1Pe_4:14 (equivalent to ὡς Χριστιανός, 16). The simple dative τῷ ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ signifies by the power of Christ's name, pervading and prompting souls, Mat_7:22; so also τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου (i. e. of God) λαλεῖν, of the prophets, Jas_5:10 R G; τῷ ὀνόματι σου, by uttering thy name as a spell, Mar_9:38 Rst bez G (see b. above). εἰς τό ὄνομα τοῦ Χριστοῦ συνάγεσθαι is used of those who come together to deliberate concerning any matter relating to Christ's cause (German auf den Namen), with the mind directed unto, having regard unto, his name, Mat_18:20. ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνοματου (A. V. for my name's sake), i. e. on account of professing my name, Mat_19:29; also διά τό ὄνομα μου, αὐτοῦ, etc.: Mat_10:22; Mat_24:9; Mar_13:13; Luk_21:17; Joh_15:21; 1Jn_2:12; Rev_2:3. διά τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ κυρίου παρακαλεῖν τινα, to beseech one by employing Christ's name as a motive or incentive (cf. Winer's Grammar, 381 (357)), 1Co_1:10; by embracing and avowing his name, ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν λαβεῖν, Act_10:43. ὑπέρ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ, equivalent to for defending, spreading, strengthening, the authority of Christ, Act_5:41 (see below); ; Rom_1:5; 3Jn_1:7; (but according to the better texts in Act_5:41; 3Jn_1:7, τό ὄνομα is used absolutely, the Name, namely, κυρίου, of the Lord Jesus; so Vat. 3. In imitation of the Hebrew ωΕΡξεϊ (Num_1:2; Num_1:18; Num_1:20; Num_3:40; Num_3:43; Num_26:53), the plural ὀνόματα is used equivalent to persons reckoned up by name: Act_1:15; Rev_3:4; Rev_11:13.
4. (2) By a usage similar to that of the Heb. ωΡΕν , ὄνομα comes in the NT to denote the character, fame, authority of the person indicated (cf. Php_2:9 f. , Heb_1:4 ). With this may be compared the use of the word as a title of dignity or rank , as in P Oxy I. 58 .6 (A.D. 288) where complaint is made of the number of officials who have devised offices for themselves ὀνόματα ἑαυτοῖς ἐξευρόντες , and provision is made that, on the appointment of a single trustworthy superintendent, the remaining offices shall cease .14 f. τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ ὀνόματα παύσηται . See also the use of the word as a title of address in the sepulchral inscr. Preisigke 343 .9 Ἀντωνεῖνε . . . φιλάνθρωπε καλὸν ὄνομα κύριέ μου κτλ ., and the interesting graffito of A.D. 79 (cited by Deissmann LAE , p. 276), where there is allusion to a certain lady Harmonia ἧς ὁ ἀριθμὸς μ̄ε̄ (or ᾱλ̄ε̄ ) τοῦ καλοῦ ὀνόματος (cf. Sometimes ὄνομα is best left untranslated, as in P Oxy III. 513 .22 (A.D. 184) (= Chrest. I. p. 216) τὸν τόκον τὸν [ὀ ]ν [ό ]ματί μου παραγρα [φέ ]ντα , the interest debited to me (Edd.).
(4) The meaning person, which is found in Act_1:15 , Rev_3:4 ; Rev_11:13 , may be illustrated from P Oxy IX. 1188 .8 (A.D. 13) παρὰ τοῦ ὑπογεγραμμέ (νου ) ὀνόματος , from the person below written, BGU I. 113 .11 (A.D. 143) ἑκάστῳ ὀνόματι παρα (γενομένῳ ), P Thead 41 .10 (A.D. 309) διέγ (ραψεν ) Σακάων καὶ οἱ κοι (νωνοὶ ) ἀπόρων ὀνομα̣τ̣ω̣ν̣ τάλαντα τρία , and the late PSI I. 27 .22 (Acts of Martyrdom v/A.D.) ἀπέκτ ]εινεν ψυχὰς [εἰδωλολατ ]ρῶν ὡς ὀνόματα χείλια πεντακόσια .
(5) The phrase εἰς (τὸ ) ὄνομά τινος is frequent in the papyri with reference to payments made to the account of any one (cf. Lat. nomen ) P Rein 44 .27 (A.D. 104) χρησθὲν εἰς τὸ Διονυσίου [ὄ ]νομα χρεωστῇ Ἑρμαίῳ νεωτέρῳ , P Meyer 8 .13 (A.D. 151) πάντα̣ [καταγραφῆναι ] συνέταξεν εἰς τὸ τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ ὄνο̣μα , and Ostr 1160 .1 (ii/A.D.) διάγραψον εἰς ὄνομ (α ) κληρονόμων Ἄπιδος Νότου (καὶ ) Λ (ιβός ). The usage is of interest in connexion with Mat_28:19 , where the meaning would seem to be baptized into the possession of the Father, etc. See further Deissmann BS pp. 146 f., 197, and W. Heitmuller s monograph Im Namen Jesu (Gφttingen, 1903), where (p. 100 ff.) the phrase is claimed as good vernacular. With εἰς ὄνομα = qua in Mat_10:41 f. , cf. P Oxy I. 37 i. 17 (A.D. 49) (= Selections , p. 50), where in an action against a nurse for the recovery of a male foundling it is stated βούλεται ὀν [ό ]ματι ἐλευθέρου τὸ σωμάτιον ἀπενέγκασθαι , she wishes (to defend herself on the ground) that the foundling was carried off in virtue of its being freeborn.
The phrase ἐν (τῷ ) ὀνόματί τινος , so common in the NT, has not been found outside Biblical Greek, but Deissmann ( BS , p. 197 f.) compares the use of the dat. in Syll 364 (= .3 797) .33 (A.D. 37), where the names of five πρεσβευταί , who had signed the oath of allegiance to Caligula taken by the inhabitants of Assos, are followed by the words οἵτινες καὶ ὑπὲρ τῆς Γαΐου Καίσαρος Σεβαστοῦ Γερμανικοῦ σωτηρίας εὐξάμενοι Διὶ Καπιτωλίωι ἔθυσαν τῶι τῆς πόλεως ὀνόματι . The simple dat. is found in BGU IV. 1205 .23 (B.C. 28) δὸς Ἀλεξίωινι τῶι βαφῖ τῶι ἐμῶι ὀνόματι κτλ ., P Oxy III. 531 .25 (ii/A.D.) πέμψον Φρόνιμον πρὸς Ἀσκληπιάδην ἐμῶι ὀνόματι , P Flor II. 226 .13 (iii/A.D.) πέμψον αὐτὰ εἰς Ταλεῖ τῷ ἐμῷ ὀνόμ (α )τι , and from the inscrr, JHS xvii. (1897), p. 411 No. 14 προστείμου ὀνόματι , and CIG 3919 στεφανωτικοῦ ὀνόματι , where, as Evans ( CQ xv. p. 26) points out, ὀνόματι might be rendered under the heading of.
