ἀναπτύσσω: 1 aorist ἀνεπτυξα; (ἀνά cf. the German auf equivalent toauseinander, see ἀναλύω and πτύσσω to fold up, roll together); to unroll (i. e. open for reading): τό βιβλίον (as in Herodotus 1, 48 and 125), Luk_4:17 (R G T) (2Ki_19:14). The books of the Hebrews were rolls (ξΐβΔμΜεϊ) fastened to (one or) two smooth rods and furnished with handles, so that they could be rolled up and unrolled; (cf. B. D. under the word ).

"to unfold, disclose, reveal", Lat. explicare, Trag. as military term, τὴν φάλαγγα ἀναπτ. "to fold back" the phalanx, i. e. deepen it by wheeling men from both flanks to rear, French "replier", Xen. ; but conversely, τὸ κέρας ἀναπτ. "to open out" the wing, i. e. "extend" the line by wheeling men from rear to front, French "deployer", id=Xen.
