1 There are no doubt certain contextual constraints involved in the choice of ἀναδέχομαι[a], ἀποδέχομαι[a], ἐπιδέχομαι[a], εἰσδέχομαι, ὑποδέχομαι, προσδέχομαι[b], and παραδέχομαι[b] in the sense that the spacial relationships involved in the welcoming of a guest can be reflected in the prepositional prefixes. For example, in LUK 8:40 the use of ἀποδέχομαι may focus upon the particular source, while ἐπιδέχομαι in 3JN 1:10 may be relevant in view of the fact that the believers are coming to a particular point. προσδέχομαι in LUK 15:2 may suggest a kind of reciprocal relationship which is established with outcasts, and παραδέχομαι in ACT 15:4 may simply point to spacial proximity. However, it would be wrong to insist upon clear distinctions in meaning based on the very limited number of contexts involved. Some of these same distinctions in spacial relations may exist for the set προσλαμβάνω[e], παραλαμβάνω[d], ἀπολαμβάνω[d].

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

παραλαμβάνω is the usual expression for receiving anything but money, for which ἀπέχω (aor. ἔσχον) is regularly used. Its correlative, as in the NT, is παραδίδωμι : thus Sy// 588 (c. B.c. 180), a long account of ἀναθήματα in the Temple of Apollo at Delos, begins τάδε παρελάβομεν ἐν τῶι ναῶι τοῦ ᾿Απόλλωνος παρὰ ἱεροποιῶν . . . καὶ παρέδομεν τοῖς μεθ᾽ ἑαυτοὺς ἱεροποιοῖς. Cf. also the illiterate P Oxy IV. 7425. (B.c. 2) (=Witkowski?, p. 127 f.) παράλαβε παρὰ ἸΠόθου τὸν κάλαμ[ο]ν mava[p](Quwr. . . ἀπόστειλόν plo]. πόσας δέσμας παρείληφες (for form, /roleg. p. 52) . . - παράδος δέ τινι τῶν φίλων ἀριθμῷ αὐτάς, ‘receive from Pothus the reeds all tovether, send me Word how many bundles you have received, and deliver a few of them (see s.v. παραδίδωμι) to one of our friends.” Wilcken Osé. i. p. 109 quotes a few instances of ἔλαβον in receipts with its correlative παρέλαβον in one place: on the relation of παρέλαβον to ἔλαβον in Jn 115 see Proleg. p- 115. Other exx. of the verb are P Fay 123! (c. A.D. 100) παραλέγομαι 48 παραλάβωμεν τὸ ἐλάδιον λυί(--οι)πὸν ἐὰν δόξῃ σοι, “‘ let us get from him the rest of the oil if you agree” (Edd.), P Tebt 11. 30927 (A.D. 116-7) παρειλήφαμεν τὸ [βιβλίδιον, ‘we have received the account,” and P Strass I. 4555 (A.D. 312) παρελάβαμεν τὸ ἐνγεγραμμένον μέτρον τοῦ πυροῦ καὶ κριθῆς ὡς πρόκιται, ‘we received the registered amount of wheat and barley as agreed.” With Jn 145 Deissmann (LAE p. 166) compares an ancient epistolary formula: δόξα... - +. 0G... τὴν ψυχὴν ἡνίκα συμφέρει παραλαμβάνοντι. The form παρελάβοσαν in 2 Thess 3°N* AD* has received increasing attestation since Moulton’s note in Prodeg. p. 52, and for the intruded nasal in παραλήμψομαι (Jn 14%), see the exx. in Mayser G7. p. 194f. P Amh II. 3515 (B.c. 132) shows ἐπὶ τὴν παράλημψιν τῶν ἐκφορίων, ‘‘for the colléction of the rents”: cf.
