Hdt. down; to make to remain over; to reserve, to leave or keep safe, lay by; mid. to make to remain for one’s self, i.e. 1. to preserve for one’s self (Sept. for WJ) : τὴν ψυχήν, life, Lk. xvii. 33 T Tr WH (τὰς ψυχάς, Xen. Cyr. 4, 4, 10). 2. to get for one’s self, purchase: ri, Acts xx. 28 (Is. xliii. 21; δύναμιν, Thue. 1, 9; Xen. mem. 2, 7, 3); τὶ ἐμαυτῷ, gain for myself (W. § 38, 6), 1 Tim. iii. 13 (1 Mace. vi. 44; Xen. an. 5, 6, 17).

περιποιέω. For the mid. ‘make my own,” “ἀσηϊῖγα for oneself,” as in 1 Tim 313, see P Tor II. 87 (B.c. 119) (ἑαυτ)ῶι μεγάλην ἐξουσίαν περι(ποιούμενος), and cf. P Amh II. 34 (ad)? (c B.C. 157) πλεῖόν τι περιποιούμενοι τῶι βασιλεῖ, ‘gaining more for the king.’’ For the corresponding use of the act cf. In support of this unusual meaning for περιποιέω Dr. Hunt thinks that cou must be understood, and refers us to the somewhat similar passage 1n Isocr. p. 150 E, where the common reading is μεγάλην αἰσχύνην τῇ πόλει περιποιοῦσιν (ποιοῦσιν Blass, περιαπτοῦσιν Cobet), and to Polyb. v. 58. 5 χωρὶς τῆς αἰσχύνης, ἣν περιποιεῖ νῦν τῇ βασιλείᾳ.
